America’s national character will have to be changed if progressives are going to implement their agenda. So, changing social norms is the progressive agenda. To understand how far this has advanced, and how difficult it will be to reverse the inculcation of dependency, consider the data Nicholas Eberstadt deploys in National Affairs quarterly:
America’s welfare state transfers more than 14 percent of gross domestic product to recipients, with more than a third of Americans taking “need-based” payments. In our wealthy society, the government officially treats an unprecedented portion of the population as “needy.”
Transfers of benefits to individuals through social welfare programs have increased from less than 1 federal dollar in 4 (24 percent) in 1963 to almost 3 out of 5 (59 percent) in 2013. In that half-century, entitlement payments were, Eberstadt says, America’s “fastest growing source of personal income,” growing twice as fast as all other real per capita personal income. It is probable that this year a majority of Americans will seek and receive payments.
This is not primarily because of Social Security and Medicare transfers to an aging population. Rather, the growth is overwhelmingly in means-tested entitlements. . .

My eyes water.
There is no overstating the evil of the welfare state in destroying humanity.
And everyone will gladly keep their hands in the Treasury all the way down to collapse without batting an eyelash.
“Progressive” is a fraud. Call them socialists, communists or Marxists. As bad as “climate change”
It started with lowering the import tariffs back in the 60’s. We’ve been offshoring lots of industries ever since. And now it’s weakened the economy to the point that everyone is seeking out welfare to survive.

All this was by design and done on purpose.
LBJ and democrats purposely set in place the destruction of freedom and Capitalism and they introduced the Welfare State complete with Socialist goals and ideas.
Ask yourself - where/how does the the Left/Progressive US Government get the money to support this?
And don’t say TAXES. Because the government only collects enough total revenue to fund entitlements, nothing else.
You can have open immigration or you can have a welfare state, but you can’t have both for very long.

The high taxes and increasing public spending in the 50s were the start of it; that drove manufacturing jobs out of many big cities. Dropping tariffs while adding Medicare and the welfare state really compounded that pre-existing problem.
BTW, the first VWs were imported to the US in 1949.

As in, he is “going to give” a lot of stuff to people, and that makes her feel good about herself.
I heard her say that and could just feel myself “darken”.

In a time of serious national emergency, many of these nanny-state dependents will begin to starve.
The enemy will appeal to them directly, telling them that if they help defeat the US they’ll be taken care of later.
That will create a fifth column consisting of roughly one-third of the total population to make mayhem from the behind the lines.
That’s a terrifying possibility. Now they are largely stupid, lazy, and unhealthy which might mitigate their usefulness a bit. But still scary.
That's true. Their ineptitude will result in the plot being unmasked quickly, which might in turn result in a terrible backlash or pogrom against these populations in general, without regard to the nuances or individual leanings.
