Obama to propose two free years of community college for students

President Barack Obama on Friday will propose making two years of community college free for students. In a White House video posted Thursday evening, Obama said he wanted to offer “a little preview” of his plans for the Jan. 20 State of the Union address.

“What I’d like to do is to see the first two years of community college free for everybody who’s willing to work for it,” Obama said. “It’s something we can accomplish, and it’s something that will train our workforce so that we can compete with anybody in the world.”

The proposal would make two years of community college free for students with a C+ average who attend school at least half-time and who are making “steady progress” toward their degree.

Obama will visit Pellissippi Community College in Tennessee on Friday. Beginning this year, any state high school graduate is eligible for two years of free community college tuition under the Tennessee Promise. Federal funding would cover three-quarters of the average cost of community college, and Obama is asking states to pick up the rest of the tab — assuming Congress agrees to the plan in the first place. “I hope we’ve got the chance to make sure that Congress gets behind these kinds of efforts to make sure that even as we rebound and grow in 2015, that it benefits everybody and not just some,” the president said in the video.

To be eligible, community colleges would have to offer academic programs that fully transfer credits to local public four-year colleges and universities or training programs with high graduation rates that lead to in-demand degrees and certificates. Community colleges must also adopt “promising and evidence-based institutional reforms” to improve student outcomes.

If all 50 states participate, the proposal could benefit 9 million students each year and save students an average of $3,800 in tuition, the White House said. Nirvi Shah contributed to this report.

That’s why student loan debt will never be forgiven (sorry, Lizzie). The gubmint actually makes a profit from the loans.

The teachers’ unions have been very good to the Democrat Party and those donations must keep coming.

If some young people must suffer through useless make-show classes taught by otherwise unemployable fools and take on more government debt to please the unions - well, it’s the least he can do for the unions.

Bunk. That man is NOT going to tell local communities who can and who will not go free to our colleges.

I'm guessing he's just offering to pay (with our money) for their college bills for their 2 years.

Just one question:

Who(m) is designing the Common Core Curriculum for Community Colleges?

They do need more indoctrination after secondary skool ya know.

“”When did they change it and start charging tuition? I did my first to years at a community college BECAUSE THEY WERE FREE!!! “”

Glad you stepped in because I was thinking the same thing. Of course, at my age I am not at all responsible for the way I remember things....

Bunk. That man is NOT going to tell local communities who can and who will not go free to our colleges.

The federal gov't. can't do it but they can "entice" the states to do it. They offer gubmint funds, the states take the bait, then the gubmint calls the shots.

IIRC Pellissippi Community College is ran by the State Board of Regents and is a state owned school where you pay a basic tuition which most families in this area can afford. His next stop will be in an Industrial Park which is prospering despite his policies. Maybe His Highness would like to discuss the Global Warming last night north of Knoxville with 5 degree temps and TVA due to closing of Coal Fired Steam Plants was asking consumers to cut back on electrical usage.

Some of the local media is also bust playing up the racial side of this of course talking about the Clinton Twelve {in the town where the Industrial Park is located he will visit}. I bet he fails to mention all plants there are Non Union, as many hours work as you want at most of them, and did well even in the downturn again despite his policies. Oh yea he's in a Republican County & GOP Majority General Assembly and governor state also LOL.

As for me? I will avoid The Hardin Valley, Oak Ridge, and Clinton/Norris area west of I-75 at all cost. I feel sorry for the ones stuck on the routes he will have to travel. Afternoon traffic can be bad enough anyway.

They first have to get out of High School. I read today that first year college students were reading at a 7th grade level. We can look forward to college graduates reading at a 9th grade level... But they will still be working at Burger King

Is he planning to open up the US education system to the world? Will anyone in the US will be able to attend community college? You have to prove you graduated from HS to get into our local community college. A foreigner tried to enroll and they were told to bring their high school transcripts. The couldn’t do it, so they were not allowed to enroll. But if everyone can get two years free, the entire world will be able to waltz in and get an associates degree.

What is worse is what I see happening to the education system. Right now in Florida, the community colleges feed the universities. Homeschoolers in the state use community colleges to get their children finished early and into the university system with grades no one can question. I can easily see the community colleges becoming mandatory two year extensions of high school. Made to indoctrinate everyone coming into the system, especially those who have not been indoctrinated in the public schools previously.

This is a set up. He wants this to be the Congress of no. He will propose every cockamamie idea now knowing that Congress will say no.

The problem is that this congress may NOT say no...one only needs to look to the cromnibus bill :(
