President Barack Obama on Friday will propose making two years of community college free for students. In a White House video posted Thursday evening, Obama said he wanted to offer “a little preview” of his plans for the Jan. 20 State of the Union address.
“What I’d like to do is to see the first two years of community college free for everybody who’s willing to work for it,” Obama said. “It’s something we can accomplish, and it’s something that will train our workforce so that we can compete with anybody in the world.”
The proposal would make two years of community college free for students with a C+ average who attend school at least half-time and who are making “steady progress” toward their degree.
Obama will visit Pellissippi Community College in Tennessee on Friday. Beginning this year, any state high school graduate is eligible for two years of free community college tuition under the Tennessee Promise. Federal funding would cover three-quarters of the average cost of community college, and Obama is asking states to pick up the rest of the tab — assuming Congress agrees to the plan in the first place. “I hope we’ve got the chance to make sure that Congress gets behind these kinds of efforts to make sure that even as we rebound and grow in 2015, that it benefits everybody and not just some,” the president said in the video.
To be eligible, community colleges would have to offer academic programs that fully transfer credits to local public four-year colleges and universities or training programs with high graduation rates that lead to in-demand degrees and certificates. Community colleges must also adopt “promising and evidence-based institutional reforms” to improve student outcomes.
If all 50 states participate, the proposal could benefit 9 million students each year and save students an average of $3,800 in tuition, the White House said. Nirvi Shah contributed to this report.
Nope. He'll create "programs" to give away tax-payer dollars so the gimmes can then pay it to the colleges.
I have always supported education but opposed government run school systems past the county level. It is communism to think only a government can provide educational opportunities.
Government should never be in commercial enterprises.

Because the “Affordable Care Act” has made health insurance SO much more affordable as has 3rd party payers and gubmint loans made 4 years colleges so much more affordable!

Of course not, this will require all new “green” buildings to be built to replace the current buildings.

If he would shut down the Departments of Education/Energy/Labor/HUD/HHS/ETC/ETC/ETC then funnel some of the savings to the States directly, then I could be for this.

In my old hometown, which is now mostly black, the graduation rate is about 40%. So I’d have to say this will generally benefit white folks....and we know that’s not where his interest lies....so I’d say the whole thing is a farce.
If a student's head/brain wasn't turned from the real American values, Obama is going to try again...he is a persistent SOB. (Kids like Hitler's Brown Shirted youngsters) I wonder where the parents of these precious little Americans are today....they elected an Anti-American who was raised a Muslim because his father was and by Socialist and Communist relatives....not just another politician: an anti-American, an enemy of freedom in our White House.....you can't criticize him or Man! you be labeled a racist. No to more FREE EDUCATION by teachers who are Socialists if not Communists...I doubt many of them would fight for the freedom of this country...they surely gave it away in the last two elections.

Hey, I should have thought of that. Who cares about paying down that 1.2 trillion dollar student loan debt anyway? Even at a measly 34 billion a year. Does that cover the interest on the debt? Who cares about that either? No big deal.

In other words, debasing and racializing community colleges so they can no longer turn out good productive people of any color.
The CC system produces the best people. Granted, they should have learned that stuff in high school, but it wasn’t their fault that they didn’t.
I disagree with this plan, but what you said is total bulls#it.
With all due respect to mom & pop, somewhere along the line parents stopped making sure that their children were taught about the federal government’s constitutionally limited powers as the Founding States had intended for those power to be understood.
Will it include middle class and poor white kids too? I doubt it.
