Former Yankees owner George Steinbrenner had tremendous appreciation for the the men and women who serve as New York City firefighters, cops and Port Authority members.. It's why he started the Yankee Silver Shield Foundation, which for nearly 32 years has provided for the education of children whose parents were killed in the line of duty. The New York Daily News reports that Steinbrenner's foundation will provide the money needed to support the education of both of Ramos' sons.
"Who's going to take care of these kids," Steinbrenner asked his friend, former Olympian Jim Fuchs, who would run the foundation until his death, also in 2010. "We are."
The foundation, now run by Fuchs' daughter Casey, has paid for the educations of thousands of children of fallen NYPD, FDNY, state police and Port Authority workers in the tri-state area, as well as 700 children who lost a parent in the terrorists attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.
Ramos' partner Menjian Liu, who was also gunned down alongside Ramos, was recently married but had no children.
The foundation was started in 1982 after Steinbrenner witnessed a news account of a mother and four children folding an American flag at the funeral of their father, a police officer who was gunned down on duty.
God bless the Yankees...
Class team, class act all the way.
Class move.
A diehard Brooklyn Dodger fan salutes the NY Yankees.
Gee I wonder if this is how Mooch felt when she (supposedly) finally found something good about the USofA????

God bless Mr. Steinbrenner, a gentleman with a heart. Deeds speak, while words are weak.

It wouldn’t surprise me if Kaiser de Blasio has the taxpayers of NY pay for the education of the gunman’s children.
I have heard of only 1 athlete making a statement to support the NYPD or the lives of the fallen officers.
I think that the Yankees should get a round of applause for that, as well as a means for the nation’s populace to be able to toss a few bucks in the deal, too.
How would they know who his children are, when I'm sure the gunman didn't even know.
And just another reason why I’ve been a life long Yankee fan!
God bless George Steinbrenner, the Yankees and the families of these two officers.
You know what they say...
World Series Number 28 is ALWAYS the toughest one...
Red Sox fan salutes the Yankees.
Well that sure paid for all the publicity of them putting the word out.
That’s great! That’s a true American.
One of my retirement gifts in 2005 was a private tour of Yankee Stadium.....I have pictures of me in the dugout, bullpen, locker room, Memorial Park.....everywhere and I spent the whole time in tears....I’ve been a Yankee fan my entire life and to be able to wander around Yankee Stadium was a dream come true. When I was in the 6th grade, Bobby Richardson’s parents lived next door.....heck, I thought I’d died and gone to heaven!!!!
Just make the offer, and his children will show up. By the thousand.
Growing up in Philly, it’s a National League town, but I always liked the Yanks too. My old man liked them too.
The Yanks just had that whole “THIS is what Baseball is all about!” thing going for them.
And they always got talent because it was important to WIN.
Phils... well, they bring a couple kids up from minors, put them in the arena to get fed to the lions, and then say “Buy more tickets, because NEXT year.. next year... next year...”
Sigh...
