George Steinbrenner's Yankee Silver Shield Foundation has, for 32 years, provided for the education of the children of New York City cops, firefighters and Port Authority employees who were killed in the line.
Yankee owner George Steinbrenner died in 2010, but his appreciation for the men in blue who protect New York City lives on.
For 32 years, Steinbrenner's Yankee Silver Shield Foundation has provided for the education of the children of New York City police officers, firemen and Port Authority employees who died in the line of duty, and will do so for the family of NYPD officer Rafael Ramos, gunned down by a cold-blooded killer Saturday along with his partner, Wenjian Liu.
The foundation will pay for the education of Ramos' son, 13-year-old Jaden, and another son who is in college.

Today I am a Yankees fan, God Bless them!
Steinbrenner was a class act.
Does anyone know if there was any kind of observation at the start of the Jets game today? The network broadcast did not indicate anything.
Unlikely. This would force the black athletes to choose between honoring the NYPD or the “I can’t breathe” crowd. They will probably take the safe route and do nothing.
Yes! Wonderful!
A White Jet had something on.
George was a good ol’ cuss. Used to call in and donate generously to the Red Sox’ Jimmy Fund charity telethon in Boston.
Im in LA so of course we are supposed to hate the Yankees but today I am a Yankees fan, what a nice gesture God Bless them..Jaden Ramos is a good kid, only 13 years old and he has had to go from 13 to 30 overnight..his father raised him well I know he will grow up and make his father proud
Yes he was, and he gave a lot of money to my Alma Mater as well.
The Yankees have not always fielded the best team in baseball but they have always been classy. I’m proud to be a fan at a time like this.
Bravo for the Yankees! And that’s the first time I have ever said that.
Go figure, I thought it was Al Sharpton who was going to step forward and make the offer.
Presuming that to be Nick Mangold - I wear his jersey with a lot more pride, today !
A lot of people used to hate George. But I liked him. He did what all owners of teams want, to win. He paid for the best players. He did not go on the cheep like the Atlanta Braves, my former favorite team does. They have sold every decent player they had while at the same time out bid themselves for the likes of BJ Upton giving that deadbeat $75 million for 5 years and he hits nothing and sets strikeout records the past two seasons. George paid to have the best players. I loved his fights with Billy Martin. Lots of laughs.
Living in Tampa one you know George Steinbrenner always support dead cops family
I’m a Mets fan - but I always admired the Yankees first class attitude, once “The Boss” took over. Thanks for your reply!
It is Mr. Mangold.
My father grew up going to Yankee Stadium watching the greats play. He took the family there when I grew up, declaring his children would bleed blue and white pinstripes in honor of his favorite team.
I’m so glad I’m my dad’s daughter. Thank you Yankees.
Nick Mangold http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nfl-shutdown-corner/jets—nick-mangold-wears-nypd-hat-174551319.html
You bet ! My son asked me who my favorite Jet was, a few Decembers ago. I knew where he was going with it. Sanchez grew up in our town, so I sure didn’t want to run into him with his jersey on, like a little groupie, so I thought for a minute, and replied “(Mr.)Nick Mangold”. “That makes sense, Dad, he’s a grumpy old white guy, just like you” was his answer:)
Thanks for setting me straight, EE !
