She’s old enough to vote, but still a child demanding support... Hmmmm.

Obviously the parents lost this one. So, in their shoes, I’d come up with 26K to pay for the remaining 2 or so years and provide her a copy of my will which has her excluded to get anything except the paper lining the bird cage if I had one.

Unless there is a contract of some sort the court had no jurisdiction on this. Appeal.

But without government coercion.
This ruling is just wrong.

At what age, exactly, are the parents free from giving this ingrate daughter money? 40? 50?

She is demanding $26k/yr for out of state tuition. Local NJ state college is $5.5k/yr. I'd pay for that, either that or move to another FREE state and tell the NJ commies to go pound sand.....judgement or not. Appeal, sell home, move away, disinherit daughter. Allow her to visit on Thanksgiving/Christmas only, and attend her wedding and birth of children. No gifts.
Any child that sues her parents gets NOTHING. Love and affection, yes, money no.

In Germany the law is adult children can force their parents to pay for stuff like this up till age 30.
Obamacare was Step One in that direction.

Ah, I can explain:
These parents are divorced. Here in NJ, after a divorce, the parents are required to pay for their children’s college education for four years.
So, this ruling is very common here. The only thing unusual about this case is that the daughter herself filed the lawsuit. (Usually one parent is bringing the other parent to court over it.)
However, NJ law doesn’t say the child gets to choose any college she wants. (At least, that’s not my understanding of it.) An in-state college would be less expensive.
Are these parents very wealthy? Maybe that was taken into account in the case.
To: Tired of Taxes
Nobody has a right to expect their parents to pay for college.

That’s ok, they will get it back when the parents sue the daughter for their old age care and expenses.
To: GeronL
AGREED. I paid my own way. Once you’re 18, you’re an adult.
I’m just explaining the law here. (I didn’t write the law.) This is not unusual at all here, except that the child herself filed the lawsuit.
To: taxcontrol
She will counter by volunteering their names to a death panel for useless old eaters.
