A resolution to split the state of Florida in two has passed in the city of South Miami, the newspaper in South Miami the Sun-Sentinel reported.
The officials voted 3-2 in favor of making South Florida the 51st state, according to the Sun-Sentinel.
The city's Vice Mayor Walter Harris stated that the capitol doesn't provide South Florida with the proper representation and doesn't address the specific concerns like the sea level rising. The mayor supported the secession too.
Those opposed to the idea said that this vote sets a precedent for parts of cities to break away if need be.
The northern border of the new state would be Brevard, Orange, Polk, Hillsborough and Pinellas counties, the Sentinel reported. The new state would include 24 counties total.
For the secession to be enacted it would need electorate approval from the entire state as well as the Congressional approval, according to the Sun-Sentinel.
Fine with me!
I predict complete failure.
Two more Dim Senators isn’t such a good thing, however. Most of the electoral votes would be in the new “state” as well.
South Florida, Western Maryland, East Colorado, DC, PR...the electoral map could become VERY interesting.
IOW two new hard left pro amnesty pro homosexual special rights senators with a far left governor.
If they wanted to be productive move the capital from nowhere talahassee to central Orlando vicinity. (not Orlando itself)
in general, GREAT idea.
But I love the Keys, and this would FK that up!!!!!
Wouldn’t that make it the 58th state?
Maybe that part of Florida can join with Cuba (and then watch all of the good Cuban immigrants move to the north).
As you note, would most likely result in 2 Democrat Senators from the south and a 50/50 split from the northern half.
Actually think this is really what is behind the idea of spliting States. A massive increase in permanent Democrat Senators and Congressmen.
Great, two more liberal senators and a passel of Dem reps in congress........................
I’m guessing: South South Miami and North South Miami.
Maybe we should just give it back to Spain...................if they’d take it...................
My only surprise, and a little disappointment, is that this movement did not begin in northern Florida.
Who is going to pay for the free stuff?
Is this just Miami? or did all three/four/five counties vote on this?
They separated from the Chicago Mafia long ago.
Just a few more Pols on their payroll....
I find the northern reaches of the new state very interesting.
If, and that is a very big IF, I supported this political and economic grab I would support a different northern boundary. My proposed boundary would follow the “natural” boundary of Stuart - Lake Okeechobee - Fort Myers following various interconnect canals , rivers, and waterways. There are only 17 bridges that cross this new boundary between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico.
That way, when (not if) the new government of the new state ran out of money, they could easily erect toll booths to extort (excuse me - collect) money from people traveling into their new, Democratically controlled, state.
BTW - one of the expressed reasons for the new state is because the rest of the state is “denying” the necessary funds from Dade County to combat the impact of climate change induced rising sea levels. Or at least that is what one of the local papers is reporting.
