Last December, here in San Antonio, the last words an unarmed university student ever spoke was “What? Are you gonna shoot me?”

The kid was dead. Shot because he dared to backtalk a campus cop.

Both presume themselves to be in control of the situation.
Wonder which one wins? I’m hoping for B, if anything due to the fact that obeying the specific law was at question due to construction, and there were numerous others doing the very same thing at that moment who were not accosted and arrested.

The Supreme Court has held that is it NOT against the law to provide police officers with ID no matter what the cop says.

The campus cop could have easily said “please turn around and use the sidewalk” or something. Pure over reaction by the cop.
I don’t know who I hate more, overbearing cops or university professors with a smug sense of entitlement. I do know if a cop asks me for an ID and I refuse bad things will follow. If I’m cooperative the worst that will probably happen is a ticket, which I can fight in court later.

In this course we will examine the social construction of race and its effects as they pertain to dynamics of race and power in American society. Course readings will originate from a variety of fields, including history, law, cultural studies, literature, and rhetoric. This class is guaranteed to be engaging as well as challenging. We will work through the oft difficult, fraught and ‘unsaid’ aspects of race, justice, and American culture. Readings will include work by George Lipsitz, Krista Ratcliff, Joel Olson, Eduardo Bonilla-Silva, Richard Delgado, and Michelle Alexander among others. While our focus will be on U.S race dynamics, we welcome students in other areas to add to the conversation.
