The American spirit is breaking
The New York Post ^ | May 18, 2014 | Michael Goodwin

The official opening of the 9/11 museum brought President Obama to New York and sparked fresh reminders of the horror of that awful day. The president called the site “sacred” and gave a moving speech about the American spirit, saying, “Like the great wall and bedrock that embrace us today, nothing can ever break us.”

It is the right thing to say and the right place to say it. But is it true? Is the American spirit really unbreakable?

I have my doubts.

There are many examples that say our spirit is breaking if not already broken. One involves a Wall Street Journal report that, six years after the housing bubble popped and sank the economy, federal officials want to lower mortgage standards again so more people can buy houses that they can’t afford. Been there, done that would seem to be the logical response, but the idea is gaining momentum because so few people can legitimately qualify for credit that the only way to spur housing growth is to junk the standards.

The same thing is happening in schools. Americans overwhelmingly agree that our educational system, once the envy of the world, is now lagging.

The cry to challenge students spawned a movement to raise the bar through the Common Core curriculum, but it is now grinding to a halt in New York and other places. The problem: Too many students are failing the tougher tests, making teachers look bad, parents unhappy—and politicians nervous.

So the standards are being shuffled aside, and self-esteem is back as the new measure of success. More students can appear to be learning and, presumably, that will make the adults happy, at least temporarily.

Because this retreat from rigor in favor of cultural “social promotion” is playing out in a million different ways...

We are now a fragile society. Once, we were anti-fragile, as shown in Nassim Taleb's excellent book "Anti-fragile".

But if you are afraid to offend anyone, if you refuse to punish anyone, if you won't hold anyone accountable, and if you simply do not believe in personal responsibility, then you are doomed to a fragile existence.

Get rid of the Democrat Party, and you’ll be surprised at how fast things shape up.

I took a graduate level course many years ago, ‘The American Presidency, and got an ‘A’, and recall a political science axiom. Believe it was (or very close to): ‘The strength of the presidency reflects the state of the country.’
Even Barry’s staunch supporters must admit among themselves that his presidency is tanking and unfortunately, we’re along for the ride. Two more years ... maybe a Republican can start to straighten out this huge mess he’s going to leave behind.
(But no ‘Republican from the conservative wing of the Democratic party’!)

‘The strength of the presidency reflects the state of the country.’

I have to say I have a problem with this. Obama does what he wants. He enforces laws that don't exist. He ignores laws that do exist. He rules by executive order. The GOP is pretty much in his pocket, and helps push his agenda.

As a man, Obama is weak, and I have no respect for him. But as a president? He is strong. He's as close to a dictator as this country has ever had.

A tyrant in the White House shows that the country is weak.

"The same thing is happening in schools. Americans overwhelmingly agree that our educational system, once the envy of the world, is now lagging. "

The American education system is NOT lagging- It is busted into a jillion pieces, by the NEA, by female teachers, union teachers, and by Marxist takeover of the school system from pre-K through university level, since 1980 or before. We are DOOMED!

Agreed. It isn’t just the presidency. It’s their religion.

The same thing is happening in schools. Americans overwhelmingly agree that our educational system, once the envy of the world, is now lagging.

If Americans received an education in the past it was because **parents** were doing a terrific job of **afterschooling**! It's taken several generations but the progressives have finally managed to severely damage the family structure that produced all that educational success.

The American system of modern schooling started out in the mid-1800s to early 1900s as a **compulsory-use**, compulsory-funded, police-enforced, and single-payer socialist-entitlement. Nothing good can come from that.

Single-payer government schooling was a progressive idea of the 19th century. Progressives have **always** controlled teacher training and curriculum development. Progressives have always pushed for greater and greater secularization until now they are utterly godless! Progressives have always pushed at the edges of society's morals and ethics. Today, nearly every teacher in the nation ( both private and government) was trained by godless Marxists in Marxist-run colleges and universities.

Anyone who think single-payer and socialist-entitlement schooling can be fixed is a fool! The very foundation upon which it is built is rotten!

"but most people even on here say everything is Bush's fault or now the Republicans’ fault "

And we have 95 plus percent of the Negro race believing that the Democrat Party is good for them, even though they are too brainwashed to understand that the Democrat Party is the party of segregation, slavery, Bull Connor, fire hoses, attack dogs, the KKK, and Margaret Sanger with her Planned Parenthood (Negro Genocide Program). But they voted for the "historic" presidential candidate, along with the rest of demonazi party.

Even if we could get rid of the Democratic Party it wouldn’t help. In their present state they would choose the next democrat like party that replaces them. The American people must choose their own way, whether to rise again to prosperity, or to doom themselves into the ash bin of histories like other great societies. On our current trajectory we will destroy our country through excessive spending and handouts.

All it took to elect Woodrow Wilson and two Roosevelts was one to three generations of voters indoctrinated in the nation's compulsory attendance, single-payer, and socialist-entitlement K-12 schools.

Children who attend single-payer and socialist-entitlement K-12 schools risk learning to be comfortable with government functionaries ruling their every move. And...Gee! If the voting mob can give a kid tuition-free schooling, why not use that power to get **lots** of free stuff?

Also....Children in secular schools **will**learn to think and reason secularly. They must just to cooperate in the secular classroom. How could it be otherwise? Today, every government school in this nation is uterly godless in it philosophic worldview. So?...How are the children learning to think? Answer: GODLESSLY!

( Yeah! I am shouting.)

The American K-12 system was **alway** a single-payer, compulsory-use, and compulsory-funded socialist-entitlement. Nothing good can come from that.

If Americans got an education it was due to the massive amounts of afterschooling done by parents and the children themselves. Now that the progressives have managed to destroy the family, and the supervised homework at the kitchen table ( “afterschooling”) we are seeing the decline in academic achievement. Single moms and two working parents are too exhausted to give kids the attention they need. That was the Marxist plan from the beginning. Broken and exhausted families and dumb kids who will grow up to be Marxist sheep.

Your post is spot on. I differ only in absolving Republicans of fault. On the whole they have not been as strong as they should be, as they MUST be. How often has the banner of “bold colors which make it unmistakably clear where we stand on all of the issues troubling the people” been raised? On the whole the Republican party prefers the pale pastels, allowing the Democrat party to select issues & frame the language of debate. Just look at the current pitiful state of the Republican party: lukewarm candidates like Romney, establishment aspirants who claim they will govern like Lyndon Johnson, their collective advocacy of “repeal and replace” rather than the abolition of PPACA - the greatest assault on the foundation principles of this country second only to slavery.

“[Conservatism] by its very nature it cannot offer an alternative to the direction in which we are moving. It may succeed by its resistance to current tendencies in slowing down undesirable developments, but, since it does not indicate another direction, it cannot prevent their continuance. It has, for this reason, invariably been the fate of conservatism to be dragged along a path not of its own choosing. The tug of war between conservatives and progressives can only affect the speed, not the direction, of contemporary developments.” Excerpt from The Constitution of Liberty
http://press.uchicago.edu/books/excerpt/2011/hayek_constitution.html

We need a party of liberty.
