An all black basketball league? Would it benefit black players and owners?

Larry Johnson was a junior college transfer who became the top star of the 1989-1991 Running Rebels of UNLV, leading them to two final four appearances and one championship. He later had a successful ten year NBA career with the Charlotte Hornets and the New York Knicks. In 1993, Johnson signed what was at the time the most lucrative NBA contract in history -- $84 million over 12 years. Nevertheless Johnson apparently believes that NBA players, despite their compensation levels, are still slaves to their white masters, and wants a new all black league. The idea for an all black league was Johnson’s initial angry reaction to the story that sports networks and sportswriters are now obsessing over, the racist comments of 80 year old Los Angeles Clippers’ team owner Donald Sterling. What would the diversity counselors say about Johnson’s approach? African Americans make up about 13% of the US population, but 76% of NBA players, a percentage that has hardly fluctuated in recent years, even with the surge in European players joining the league. African American make up 68% of NFL players, and 9% of major league baseball players, a percentage that has been dropping for many years as Hispanic and Asian players have come into the league, and young blacks show less interest in the sport. A surprisingly large number of NHL players are black, almost 5%, 3/4 of whom are Canadian.

I’m considering starting a new stock car racing circuit with all black drivers in Cadillacs.

This is crazy. An owner is secretly taped saying something stupid. And the firestorm dominates the news. And part of the reaction is that someone wants an all black league.
Would such a league survive? With only blacks involved, meaning only black fans, and black owners, and showing games only on black owned cable networks? Thinking all this through, I think they may rethink this idea, if it was ever serious in the first place.

If it did happen, in about 3 or 4 generations, those blacks would be claiming segregationist discrimination and would be suing for integration.
This is somewhat similar to the pattern that was used to segregate schools after The Civil War.
==
If they are segregated, they complain and demand integration.
If they are integrated, they complain and demand segregation.

I could not care less about the sport of basketball - so as an outside observer, it would be very interesting to watch the process, debate and societal hand-wringing if black players themselves chose to create a “black NBA.”

The vast majority of fans who purchase tickets are white. How profitable would a strictly black league be?

Not only that, but according to Rush L, the sports culture has known Sterling's views and opinions for decades. The revelations are not new.
The only thing new is that the Left/Libs/MSM have found an issue to parade in the headlines.

Would it be racist for a white person not to buy a season ticket to an all black league?

So then, if all this was known, how it is that so many black players and coaches voluntarily signed contracts to play and work for the L.A. Clippers???? Does good money override everything else????
And what about the NAACP award Sterling was going to get? In spite of what we have heard, didn’t he do some good things for the black community, if he was going to be honored? In other words, is there a “balance sheet” in which he has pluses and well as minuses with race relations? And would that balance sheet really say he’s 100% bigot?
To: Dilbert San Diego
I don’t want them to rethink this. If blacks want an all-black league, GO FOR IT !

Yes it would be racist for whites not to buy tickets to support a black league.

The idea for an all black league Whites would form their own league. Sooner or later, blacks would want to play in the white league. When they are denied, they will claim discrimination.
