A third generation dairy farmer in Rains County, Texas, is mourning the loss of his best friend and work partner after a deputy shot his dog while responding to a report of a break-in at the residence.
The deputy claims the 2-year-old blue heeler, named Candy, charged him, threatening his safety. The dogs owner, Cole Middleton, says police allowed him to review the dash cam footage of the incident and he says thats not what the video shows.
Middleton told KDFW-TV that he was on his tractor and Candy was in the bed of his truck when the deputy arrived on his property. The barking dog then jumped down and Middleton lost sight of her.
Moments later, the deputy delivered the heartbreaking news.
The officer comes down and says, Sir, Im sorry, I shot your dog she charged me, Middleton recalled in an emotional interview. I became very hysterical and very upset
I said, No, no, no
you shot my baby.

Best advice I have ever seen on FR. Cops are not your friends, they were good people doing a hard job. Over the years that has changed, no more “Protect and Defend”
The dogs know this.
Muslims hate dogs, too.
Think about it.
I’m not saying they are all like this, but there are a damned lot of them that are.
You train hard at shooting targets of criminals until you’re sick of drilling them between the eyes. You get your gear, your GLOCKS, your SIGs and all the tactrap that goes with.
Sometimes in this nondescript terror-defined world, you end up even shooting at targets formerly thought of as innocents (women, children, babies) because they ‘could’ be a right winger plant. Your whole mind gets poisoned and disconnected from reality and all you want to do is shoot something. It’s what you trained so hard for.
This is how it happens, and dogs are a convenient release.
Guess you’ve never worked with a nervous, circling dog. I suspect, since the dash cam video isn’t available, the dog was circling in excitement, not necessarily retreat.
An insecure version of Elmer Fudd, IMHO..
Why dogs? Its a warm up to the end goal, shooting anyone they deem a ‘threat’.
If I gave a man a Ferrari and said this is in case you need the extra horsepower to get out of an unsafe situation.
I’ll bet he would never hit the gas just to see what that baby will do, huh?
Well maybe thats not a good analogy of what you explained. But he’d be itching to twist that thing up the first chance he got.
Exactly. Left to their own devices with dangerous toys, the WILL eventually use them, even if it isn’t warranted.
Well, doesn’t matter now. Dog is dead and cop is on paid vacation. Cops can do no wrong.
Maybe the Farmer learned a lesson. {To wit} In this day and age, never call the police for anything, because no good ever comes from it.
Hubby's been a plumber for over 20 years and he's been nipped ONE time, but never seriously bitten.
Of COURSE a dog is going to bark and run toward (the cops call it 'charging') a stranger that shows up on the property!
IT'S THEIR JOB!
I just recently acquired my first blue heeler, and this is heartbreaking. Stories like this is exactly why I live in the country and provide for my own safety. When I'm through dealing with it and have secured my dogs, THEN I'll call the cops.
Revenge is a dish best served cold...
The cops consider you[and me] criminals [they use other phrases to describe us]they have yet to arrest. And no, they are not our friends. You can absorb that now painlessly, or have it painfully driven home later, but that is the way it is.
What EVER, a dog that circles in front of someone isn’t charging that someone.
Believe it!
Most are not your friends. Most are high-strung, adrenaline junkies who have no understanding of conflict resolution.
Violence and brutality is their Modus Operandi now.
There was a time when cops were our friends—that time is clearly over it seems.
I don’t think I can go a day without reading a story on another dog getting killed by a stupid clown cop.
I’m not saying they can do no wrong. My first response clearly indicated I do not trust them around dogs.
I would just like to see the actual dash cam video first, before making another stupid cop judgment.
Blue Heelers are awesome dogs on a farm, ranch, and super loyal family dogs. All those things that make them great for the farm and family can also make them appear dangerous to a stranger entering the property.
Maverick, a cattle dog I am currently working with, has a strong herding instinct. I would bet most folks here on FR would not be able to distinguish Mav herding you off the property vs. Mav being a threat to your safety. Also keep in mind working breeds like cattle dogs/heelers etc. have a strong territorial drive to defend.
I am beginning to think more and more we expect too much out of these cops. What is surprising that with so many people owning dogs, some level of behavior training does not take place or are they simply being trained to not take the risk of a bite and shoot first.
I went to his Facebook page he opened for the dog via a link in the article.
I can’t ‘like’ the page (I don’t see what good me pushing a button on a website would do anyway) because I don’t have a facebook account.
But the page is heartbreaking and has alot of “likers”.
2 hrs late is distressing as well! Takes four cops and a detective to sort out a dog killing. Put another notch in your gun there Big Boy! In Philly they shoot Pizza Delivery guys! SMH!
NEVER call the COPS. Not unless you want to run the risk of physical abuse, false arrest, mistaken identity or having you or your dog shot.
Pretty good chance that if you do have a dog it will be shot. I think it is in the LEO handbook. “Upon arrival at the location search for and shoot dog.”
Oath keepers? Really?
Stay away from cops and give them a wide berth. Don’t even make eye contact. Enough of them are outright dangerous to justify being wary of all of them.
The motorcycle cops were out in force yesterday on the HOV lanes. Defending the public from single driver abuse. All black leathers, black high boots. They looked for all the world like something out a movie version of enforcers of a dictatorship. But it wasn’t a movie.
