Racial minorities are more likely than white students to be suspended from school, to have less access to rigorous math and science classes, and to be taught by lower-paid teachers with less experience, according to comprehensive data released Friday by the Department of Educations Office for Civil Rights.
In the first analysis in nearly 15 years of information from all of the countrys 97,000 public schools, the Education Department found a pattern of inequality on a number of fronts, with race as the dividing factor.
Black students are suspended and expelled at three times the rate of white students. A quarter of high schools with the highest percentage of black and Latino students do not offer any Algebra II courses, while a third of those schools do not have any chemistry classes. Black students are more than four times as likely as white students and Latino students are twice as likely to attend schools where one out of every five teachers does not meet all state teaching requirements.
Here we are, 60 years after Brown v. Board of Education, and the data altogether still show a picture of gross inequity in educational opportunity, said Daniel J. Losen, director of the Center for Civil Rights Remedies at the University of California at Los Angeless Civil Rights Project.
In his budget request to Congress, President Obama has proposed a new phase of his administrations Race to the Top competitive grant program, which would give $300 million in incentives to states and districts that put in place programs intended to close some of the educational gaps identified in the data.
...
One of the striking statistics to emerge from the data, based on information collected during the 2011-12 academic year, was that even as early as preschool, black students face harsher

Poor Trayvon was suspended and look what whitey did to him. whitey = anything NOT black.
No, wisdom can cut across deep so called deficits in so called “intelligence” which is just ONE number. It would be like trying to size up your physical stature in just ONE number.
Funny thing, the crime stats show the same racial inequality? Go figure.
I have a great solution, How about Schools for Blacks only. There that should fix it.
Well the NYT is populated by loons and idiots.
Boy! No one expected this development!
Yup. And they break the law much more.
The dividing line is income level. Hate to break it to these people, but not only can parents choose a neighborhood based on its quality of schools, but it implies the obvious: Some districts have better schools. And guess what? It is often determined on income level.
I spent 1.5 school years in Mercer Island schools (yep, the same place where Obama lived with his grandparents and Michael Medved and Paul Allen now live). The schools were massively superior to the Kent school district I spent the next five years. And my attitude and grades showed it. But it was not about race. It’s about income level.
You want to be see your kids get a better education? Make more money. Or, thanks to the internet, just go here: https://www.khanacademy.org/
Oh, and I lived just a few blocks from Paul Allen about ten years ago and one of my wife’s friends, who also lived on the island, was one of the very few black families that lived on the island. They called the Crown school busses “twinkies”, because they were “yellow on the outside with a rich, white filling”.
All this report is saying is that poor people go to worse public schools than rich people, and more minorities are poor. Duh. They should watch Lean On Me.
Maybe if we bussed kids from poor neighborhoods to schools in rich neighborhoods and vice versa...

;-)
Whats worse is that an even greater percentage of blacks who misbehave GET AWAY WITH IT more than the same percentage of whites who misbehave.
Why is this? Simple. Because to punish a black child is racist. To give him a bad grade (though he deserves it) is racist. So yeah. When the experts study why there are these inequalities; they ought to factor in the numbers should be higher. Much higher.
Lessee....we’ve tried segregation and that hasn’t worked. We’ve tried Robin Hood tax distribution and that hasn’t worked. We’ve even tried *adjusting* the standardized tests and even that hasn’t worked.
Money (welfare, school breakfast, lunch and dinner programs, redistributing property/school taxes, etc.) and dumbing down the level of education and testing hasn’t worked, so what’s next?
Mandating that every two-parent white family have to raise (feed, clothe and educate) a minority child, until the age of 25?
From what I've seen white kids are sliding down the same slope, just more slowly. Maybe it would be more accurate to say "acting Asian." But then only white people are fair game for stereotyping.
I stand corrected.
“What the report doesnt mention is that the majority of black students are attending schools with black teachers and often black administrators.”
...and come from single-parent homes with no father figure present (and discipline of the children is non-existent).
That was the whole idea of "Outcome-Based Education." We want the same result for everyone. It's not fair if anybody does better than anyone else.
By the way, OBE is now called "Common Core."
There's truth to that. But there is really another simple process to having smart successful kids. And - guess what? It works for black people too.
Its called the family. Husband (father), Wife (mother) and children. It works.
Yet black illegitimacy at nearly 100 percent in the inner cities will double damn guarantee you poor educational inequalities. Let these experts do a study (they have and there are thousands) on how how black families fare better than the single baby mama's and absent fathers.
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard that while teaching. Or trying to teach is actually more like it.
Measured IQ correlates strongly to material, social, and familial success. It correlates very strongly negatively to criminal behavior, drug abuse, illegitimacy, and tendency to violence.
"Wisdom," -- whatever that is -- does not mitigate it, or the statistics would not be what they are.
Your stature analogy is apt of your misunderstanding. You are attempting to compare vague ideas which cannot be measured to things that can be. The failure of black students [on average] across a variety of metrics is quantifiable. So is the fact that they have [on average] less capacity to work with. "Wisdom" is not measurable, correlates to nothing, and is not even well nor universally defined.
I wonder if there was a study about using the variable ‘education of parents’ to explain performance of the child.
Education - you have to want it because it takes effort. But if you have an IQ of 120+, it doesn’t matter how poor you are.
