The sage grouse's potential addition to the endangered species list is a problem of epic economic consequences to states in the West, with Herbert explaining that the impact in lost economic development in Utah tops $41 billion for the oil and gas industry alone.
"The negative impacts are not acceptable to me and should not be acceptable to anyone here," Herbert told the crowd.
The event at the Utah Department of Natural Resources' auditorium is actually a precursor to a national summit that will be held in Salt Lake City this fall.

a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service decision to add the football-size bird to the endangered species list would have enormous consequences to industry, recreation, ranchers and private landowners.
"The threat of having the sage grouse listed is real," Herbert said.
In Utah, for example, the majority of the bird's population is found on private or school trust lands.

Gov. Gary Herbert: Threat of sage grouse endangered species listing is real, could cost Utah billions
"Oh! Look at the grouse!"
LIBs/DIMs want to make it impossible/illegal for anyone but them and their friends to use public lands...no walking, no atv-ing, no rock-hunting, no mining, no off-roading, no fossil hunting, no rockhounding, no off-roading, no exploring...no nothing. The sage grouse populations numbers in the millions in the west. Yet another tyrannical limiting of our rights and freedoms.
Nevada’s mining industry is clearly a major target. Who needs gold?? It’s just jobs and bling.
Gov. Herbert is correct and though this is a phony issue in my view the enviro-nazis will stop at nothing to do just that. They want public lands and now private lands shut down to the public and for them what it costs means nothing.
The EPA is not about a clean environment, despite their image otherwise.
The EPA is about a “clean enough” environment, because a clean environment requires a cessation of agriculture and energy production.
So, what is clean enough should be decided by legislation, not some bureaucratic agency.
I believe the USF&W has set a new precedent for taking land. USF&W is closing off an Oregon park beach to the public because there are no plover on the beach.
Everybody got that. Land is being taken because an endangered species is not there.
the enviro-nazis want to destroy as many jobs and private businesses as possible.
They taste like chicken, ummm...so I hear.
The EPA is destroying - on purpose - as much agriculture and energy production as they can.
The chicken farmers could produce millions of these birds.
The real goal is not to protect the birds, rather to shut down free enterprise , family farms & ranches, etc.
Actually, they’re ready-seasoned chicken.
They taste like chicken...flavored with sage. Sage hens (as they are also called) use sage in their craw like chickens use sand or pebbles.
As a consequence, the bird's meat is flavored with sage. Great eating.
Grouse!
Give me a break. Since when does a chicken, no matter how fancy, warrant being on the endangered species list?
> They taste like chicken, ummm...so I hear.
They taste like chicken, because the are chicken. A wild version, but a member of the chicken family nonetheless.
When it furthers the UN Agenda 21.
I think I’ll pass. The last time I clicked on a blaze link my computer went into La Brea Tar Pits mode.
