The discovery was made in the ruins of a Byzantine public structure located in the Ophel region - between the city of David and around 50 metres from the southern wall of the First Temple. Temple Mount is considered one of the most religious sites in Jerusalem and is where two biblical Jewish temples once stood.

It is also a site of Muslim interest site known as the Haram as-Sharif, or Noble Sanctuary.

And yet scientists have been unable to verify even one of the book's amazing assertions – and has instead disproved hundreds.

The contrast between historical accuracy of the Holy Bible and the Book of Mormon is indeed profound.

The usual term is "biblical minimalists": ideas presented by scholars the likes of Israel Finkelstein, Niels Peter Lemche and Thomas L. Thompson at the University of Copenhagen, Philip R. Davies, and Keith Whitelam.
These scholars took (or take) the position: nothing in the Bible can be believed unless it is independently attested to.
For New Testament "minamalists" you can look at John Dominick Crossan's "Jesus Seminar".

For the works of scholars opposed to "minimalism", I highly recommend the magazine, "Biblical Archaeology Review"

Thank you, my professor too presented the bible (parts of it) as basically a true history, even if some things got a bit scrambled due to time, mis-translation, etc.

Prof. A. was a very serious minded guy. Even though we kind of knew he was a believing Jew (don’t remember how we knew this, but that’s my recollection), he would NEVER have cited the Bible as true just because he believed in it relgiously.

Although it kind of is amazing that any of this stuff survives. I looked up Lon Chaney last night (because I was confused about Sr. & Jr.) and according to Wikipedia there are pretty large gaps in what is known in the life of Lon Chaney, Sr. and he was a fairly well known actor who lived from 1883-1930, that surprised me a bit.

Indeed, virtually all the Bible's basic historical background, and many of its narrative details, are supported by independent historical sources and/or archaeology.

In this context, it's interesting to note that Bill O'Reilly has claimed of his book "Killing Jesus" that it is written only from independently verified sources.
Well, that's an exaggeration, but it truly is astonishing how much independent material O'Reilly does bring into his interesting rehearsal of the Greatest Story Ever Told.
