Only seven months after the Supreme Court shattered the Voting Rights Act, a bipartisan group of lawmakers has come up with a bill that would go a long way toward putting it back together. If they can persuade Republicans in Congress to set aside partisanship and allow it to pass, they would begin to restore justice to a deeply damaged electoral process. It would be an ideal way to observe the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.s birthday this week.
The bill is far from perfect. In particular, it does not give enough weight to the discriminatory effect of voter ID laws. But it would make it more difficult for states and localities to take other actions that reduce minority voting rights. Jurisdictions would once again be put under Justice Department supervision if they committed multiple violations of the Constitution.
All states and cities would be required to make public any last-minute changes to election practices, an improvement over current law, which requires such public notice in just a few states. And the bill would make it easier to stop harmful voting changes in court before they happen.
The Supreme Courts decision last June struck down Section 4 of the Voting Rights Act, which set the formula that determined which states and localities, based on their histories of discrimination, were required to get preapproval for voting changes from the Justice Department. The courts majority ruled that the formula was obsolete, imposing a burden on states without proof that they still discriminate. The court invited Congress to come up with a new formula.

Under the proposed formula, Justice Department oversight would currently apply to only four states: Georgia, Louisiana, Texas and Mississippi. . .

The VRA IS racist and discriminatory. I am in such a legislative (Senate) district in TN, and it essentially means my vote is worthless because I am not Black, and so I have no voice or representation.
A Step Toward Restoring Voting Rights
I want oversight of CALI to make sure illegals aren’t voting. Of course the NY times wouldn’t be interested in that, just to making it easier for rats to steal elections.
Ah....the New York Times, always so concerned about what’s right for us here in Georgia.
Nobody lost their right to vote. They may have to show a photo ID to do it in some states, but I think we can all agree that is a reasonable and proper measure.
I didn't know King was such a big advocate of voter fraud. How are the "minorities" signing up for ObamaCare without some kind of I.D.? More government fraud?
Any Republican in Congress that supports re-subjecting four southern states to unconstitutional law is an Ex-Republican in Congress.
Hussein and Holder couldn’t be more brazen in their agenda to make whites second-class citizens, or worse, if they ran ads on teevee saying so. The mystery to me is that so many whites, especially on the right, don’t seem to see it or take it seriously. It’s a given that the white-guilt left falls right into lockstep with it-they applaud the suicide/genocide of the white race-but why can’t the right see it? I don’t mean the elites, the elites of every stripe consider themselves sheltered from the coming storms, but why don’t the average citizens see it? How in the world did the first black president wind up being one who is engaged in a vendetta against whites? And how did a majority manage to close their eyes to it, not just once, but twice, giving him free rein to become ever more open about it in a second term?
You got that right, inasmuch as I have anything to do with it. But I’m afraid that they really don’t care, they consider themselves insulated from the chains being wound around the rest of us, just like with CommieCare.
From a liberal perspective all liberals have the right to vote as many times as they wish in every election.
Any attempt to limit the election to one person, one vote is an infringement on the fundamental right of liberals to stuff the ballot box.
IN 2006 the GOP congress under GWB re-authorized the voting rights as is with those punitive measures on ONLY the Southern conservative states, that SCOTUS overturned..
Look where it got them in 2008 and 2012.

omfg liberal barf. mentally puking. nyt panderers.
A legitimate concern.
C'mon, Justice Department, tell the State Department to put "its money" where your mouth is.
If voting fraud is not checked, does that not curb the voting rights of those who are eligible to vote? Is this an effort to disenfranchise eligible voters, under the guise of “restoring voting rights”? When were the voting rights taken away?
Times thinks voter ID discriminates. What morons. As if the very same people they’re worried about don’t need ID for a thousand other things.
Progs love democracy. This proposal wouldn’t have a chance if the states were still represented in the senate. Repeal the 17th.
When the Communist Takeover is actually executed, the New York Times will proclaim it a “revolutionary, bold, and glorious step towards equality and fairness.”
