High Stakes For US Families Losing Jobless Benefit

The end of unemployment checks for more than a million people on Saturday is driving out-of-work Americans to consider selling cars, moving and taking minimum wage work after already slashing household budgets and pawning personal possessions to make ends meet.

Greg and Barbara Chastain of Huntington Beach, Calif., put their two teenagers on the school lunch program and cut back on dining out after losing their T-shirt company in June following a dispute with an investor.

They've exhausted their state unemployment benefits and now that the federal extensions are gone, unless they find jobs the couple plan to take their children out of their high school in January and relocate 50 miles east where a relative owns property so they can save on rent.

The news of the unemployment benefits running out for over a million Americans have been resonating all weekend of the bad news hitting the fan. If only those working-people haters, the Repubicans are, would just show a litle compassion.

The simple fact is that people were still losing their unemployment at some point.

...and cut back on dining out...

Just cut back?

It's a tough job market. The overwhelming majority of the unemployed are out there every day trying to find a job, literally any job. It's people like this who make the majority look bad.

...after losing their T-shirt company

I didn't know that business owners could collect unemployment.

Headline next week:

“Millions who could not find a job for many months (years) all of a sudden find jobs after unemployment runs out”

In the wake of hurricane Katrina people didn’t even need to prove they had been working to collect unemployment. All they had to be was old enough to have held a legal job and claim they had lost it due to the hurricane.

They had a “dispute” with a backer and lost their t-shirt shop in Huntington BEACH, CA. Bummer, Dude. Maybe they can move to Hawaii and sell shirts to Obama. I bet Mrs. Obama would buy an “I’m With Stupid” t-shirt.

I was thinking the same thing. Maybe they were paying themselves as employees and paying the taxes like everyone else.

Conservatives better get ready for this. In the next couple of weeks, there is going to a media onslaught on this issue the likes they’ve never seen. It’s going to be borderline old Soviet media.

My prediction: Republicans cave and a supplemental unemployment benefits bill is signed by Obama by the middle of January. I’d even wager that Boehner will be present the signing ceremony.

Omg! Might even be driven to take jobs, eh? Sounds really Really. “ desperate!” ( as the article portrays ). Omg. Omg. Omg! Imagine that! So incredibly desperate that they might even consider, shudder , working ?! (Gotta say, the article author either really demeans these people or else they’re really the lazy selfish bloodsucking welfare pigs the author portrays them to be. I personally prefer to believe the former. ).

put their two teenagers on the school lunch program and cut back on dining out...

Things my family no longer does since this recession began in 2008 and continues to this day:

No longer dine out;

No longer have cable/satellite TV;

No longer purchase a new car every 6-7 years; (Wife's vechile is a 2007, mine's a 2003)
I no longer "go out for lunch" while working, I brown-bag it;

No longer call a repairman when something breaks; (I've learned to fix alot myself)

No longer replace something that's broken unless it's absolutely needed;

No longer take vacations;

Not that I'm complaining because I make a decent living and if I really wanted to I could afford the above. We've decided however that it's more important to save and prepare for the worst than to enjoy life now or put our burdens on someone else (welfare, food stamps, etc..)

I damn' sure do make sure my kids are clothed and fed without relying on taxpayers to perform what every parents core responsibilities are towards their children! I wish people like the above would stop mooching off of me and the rest of the taxpayers, sucked it up and took care of their own damn kids.

“They’ve exhausted their state unemployment benefits and now that the federal extensions are gone, unless they find jobs “...the couple plan to take their children out of their high school in January and relocate 50 miles east where a relative owns property so they can save on rent.”

So it’s already working in positive ways.

Instead of staying put in a place that cant afford, and going out to eat (WTF?), they will get help from their family, in a new location, and then go and find some work, REGARDLESS if it is up to their level.
