LOS ANGELES (CBS/AP) — An Associated Press report published Friday says help was delayed for more than 30 minutes for the Transportation Security Administration agent who was fatally shot at Los Angeles International Airport earlier this month.
Gerardo Hernandez, 39, was working at a lower-level passenger check-in station on the morning of Nov. 1 when a gunman pulled a semi-automatic weapon out of a duffel bag and opened fire.
Two law enforcement officials cited in the AP reports said paramedics waited 150 yards away because police had not declared the terminal safe to enter.
It would be 33 minutes before airport police would put Hernandez, who was about 20 feet from an exit, in a wheelchair and take him to an ambulance, said the officials, who were briefed on the investigation and spoke on condition of anonymity because the probe was still ongoing.

The irony is that the cops “secured” the scene before letting him have any medical attention. Ironic because the TSA also prevents activities under the guise of security.

The first rule one learns at EMT school is you cannot enter a place where violence has happened until you get an okay from the police. You cannot do it. If you do, you will no longer have that job because you endangered all members of the emergency response group. They could not approach that man until the police said it was safe to do so.
If the police screwed up, that is their problem, not the emergency response group.
Yep, I was going postal as I witnessed it on live TV (live about 35 miles from LA) It was absolutely disgusting. VERY surprised that a bigger deal wasn't made of it.

I think everyone is blaming the cops and not the paramedics/EMTs.
The same type of government bungling we can expect with Obamacare. Imagine being taken by ambulance battered and bleeding from a car accident to a hospital and waiting a half an hour for your treatment while some clerk tries to access your Obamacare data from a government computer.
If the TSA agents were armed they could fire off a few shots to let folks know they are still alive after a shooting.

Emergency protocol also is that only a doctor can determine if death has happened. No policeman can do that. EMTs first check vital signs and report to a doctor these signs if they are connected to a doctor by radio. If they are connected to the doctor, he can tell them the patient is dead and not start CPR. If they begin CPR before talking with a doctor, they cannot stop that procedure until told to by a doctor. These are Texas protocols and I suppose they could vary by state.
The point is, determining death is done by a doctor. Certainly no policeman can do it and I would imagine that is true in any state.
As a former paramedic, I concur.
Whenever we responded to a shooting we parked away from the scene and waited until it was secure. No one is served by EMS adding to the body count.
Solution: Armored ambulance, EMT vehicles, and AR-15 carrying EMT`s.
No problem.
Never bring an unarmed sitting duck to a gunfight.
