Washington Post fact-checker Glenn Kessler last week examined this claim from President Obama, among other similar ones as he campaigned in his first term for passage of his signature reform:
That means that no matter how we reform health care, we will keep this promise to the American people: If you like your doctor, you will be able to keep your doctor, period. If you like your health-care plan, youll be able to keep your health-care plan, period. No one will take it away, no matter what.
President Obama, speech to the American Medical Association, June 15, 2009 (as the health-care law was being written.)
Kessler issued Four Pinocchios for the series of claims, though he doesnt allege a lie. I cant get into someones head, Kessler tells the Erik Wemple Blog via e-mail.
Last night, on the OReilly Factor, Fox News contributor Bernard Goldberg claimed just that ability: I think he lied to us. Host Bill OReilly found more nuance in the situation: I dont believe Barack Obama read the law. And I dont believe Dianne Feinstein read the law. I dont believe they read it, okay. I dont believe they know what the hell is going on, either of them. I believe that they are like a lot of other Americans, very ideologically disposed to giving healthcare to everybody. And thats their goal. Translation: The president was too clueless to lie.

Well then the word “lie” has no meaning to those people. Newspeak, the officall ++good language of Minitruth.
The Washington Post has never had any difficulty getting into someone's head if that someone happens to be a Republican.
O'Reilly is the clueless one.
Bob Woodward, a pillar of the Washington Post, not only got into the heads of people, he heard entire conversations - over extended periods of time - when he was no where near the locations at which the conversations took place.
It is sooo cut and dry that Obama lied, any news organization stating otherwise is definitely under the Administrations thumb.
Bush said it.
Well, the media decided that it was a lie when Bush said it, because the WMD were moved to Syria and so this business of Iraqi WMD suddenly became a Republican plot to lie us into war.
But Obamacare?? Well ... a lie is such a strong word ... shouldn't we all be more nuanced here?
The media sucks. Cannot criticize their cult leader.
Those “News organizations” who are ‘struggling’ with whether or not the president lied to the American public about the loss of their chosen healthcare policies — well let’s just say they will all be back on the Obama “reservation” the minute the subject changes — and Obama’s people are very adept at changing the subject.
your wrong about that...according to them George Bush lied about WMD in Iraq but the clinton’s, kennedy’s demoKrats did not....
I’m ok with he didn’t lie. Instead, he “promised.” And then he broke faith by doing nothing to insure that his promise was kept.
A lie to me involves something that exists. The law didn’t exist. But then again, his intention to keep his “promise” didn’t either. Period.
Lie? Broken promise? What’s the diff?
Ted Baxter likes nuance
He cant be called a Liar because of his skin color . . ?
He lied to win an election,,, go ahead and say it.
One must know what they say is untrue, and speak it anyway; therefore, not knowing it is untrue, and speaking it anyway is not a lie; just stupidity: cf true believer "truffers". By this standard, O is stupid; but we already knew that. Continuously repeating after he demonstratively knew is a lie AND stupid.
O willfully and with malice aforethought spoke what he had the power and authority to make true, by regulating his regulators; but instead, with knowledge, he made void his own words; and should have known he would eventually be caught out:
O'Bloviator is pretty clueless himself.
It took him years to acknowledge that the Sandmaggots worldwide are out to kill pretty much everybody else.
His Harvard mind is so open that his brain fell out; years ago.
I’ll take Ted.
Perhaps it's time to demand testing of all talking heads and bloviators, as well as candidates for high office, to take a "TOO STOOPID TO SERVE" test.
Criminals and sociopaths are clever enough to figure that the "I can't get into someone's mind" meme can neutralize any crime.
But more to the point...
A casual study of the word "lie" in any language will always reveal that:
THE MOST COMMON AND EFFECTIVE LIE AMONG ALL CRIMINALS IS THE LIE BY OMISSION!
Just watch the TV series "COPS" a few times and you'll see the comically obvious "masters" at it.
Or just watch CSPAN.
