NRA beat Bloomberg anti-gun group in 65 of 67 Va. delegate races

Nearly 10 percent of New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s anti-gun group Mayors Against Illegal Guns retired from their job or were sacked in Tuesday’s elections, including the organization’s two leaders: Bloomberg and Boston Mayor Thomas Menino.

Some 95 key members of the group that targets and criticizes lawmakers backed by the National Rifle Association are losing their title of “mayor.” According to an election review of Bloomberg's membership list of about 1,000, three quit the group, 69 retired from their jobs, and 23 were rejected by voters.

Among the defeated members of Mayors Against Illegal Guns were the mayors of Annapolis, Md.; Omaha, Neb.; Atlantic City, N.J.; Rochester, N.Y.; and Seattle, Wash.

Guns and Bloomberg's group were issues in some of the campaigns where the incumbents were defeated. In Chambersburg, Pa., newly-elected Republican Mayor-elect Darren Brown declared that among his first moves will be unhooking the town from the anti-gun group.

"The very, very first thing I'd like to do is get Chambersburg off the Mayors Against Illegal Guns list," Brown said.

What's more, while Bloomberg's Independence USA PAC can claim a victory in its campaign and advertising against Virginia gubernatorial candidate Ken Cuccinelli, a review of all NRA-endorsed candidates in the state show that the mayor had virtually no impact.

For example, of the 67 NRA-endorsed candidates for the Virginia House of Delegates, 65 won their election on Tuesday.

What’s more, after the 2011 legislative elections in Virginia, there were 63 states delegates rated an "A" by the NRA and that number grew to 65 on Tuesday.

Yes, it is funny isn't it? The Republicans of Virginia retained their super majority in the House of Delegates and it isn't even mentioned. And due the primary losses by two RINOs and the corresponding win by two Tea Party backed Republicans, the House of Delegates is slightly more conservative.

What is the mix in the State Senate? Do the Republicans control the Senate?

The Senate is currently tied at 20 to 20 with the tie breaking vote going to the Lt. Governor (except in some cases like appropriations). The interesting thing is that Senator Ralph Northam (D) beat E. W. Jackson (R) for Lt. Governor. This means that the Senate seat he previously won will be up for special election before the next General Assembly meeting in February 2014. This will determine the composition of the next Senate. Both parties are already working on it and the Republican canvass will be held on November 2st1 and the Dem primary will be held on November 25th. This election will be huge (or hugh if you like). If the Republican’s can take the seat, then the TMac will face a Republican super majority in the House of Delegates and a Republican controlled Senate. I currently think we have a better than 50% chance of doing that. At least one of the Republicans in the race is a good conservative. I don't know the others.

I guess this is why the gun control issue couldn’t push Cuccinelli over the top. A lot of people must have been splitting their ticket, and generally not expecting Mcauliffe to be able to actually do much to grab guns.

I actually think it had to do more with redistricting and the lack of challengers for a lot of House of Delegate members. Anyone that knew Cooch's record and NRA A rating and TMac's NRA F rating would have voted for Cooch.

The difference in the black vote alone would have changed the election in 2009, the black vote was 16% of the overall vote. In this last election, the black vote was 20% of the overall vote. With TMac getting 90+% of the black vote, this change alone made the difference in the election. And that's not counting the huge fund raising/advertising difference, GoPe dropout/non endorsement effect, McDonnell Star Scientific, federal government shutdown, and press effects.

Do you think those were real votes, or did TMac pay for precinct workers in Richmond etc to stuff the ballot boxes?

I believe they were real votes. The Dems got “suicide” candidates to run against solid Republicans for the House of Delegates to increase the black vote. I know the 65th and 60th House of Delegate Districts and they ran black candidates that got killed, but they brought in more black votes than if no one had run at all. Doing this in one District doesn't have much effect, but doing it across the Commonwealth in the “proper” Districts makes a difference - it adds up. The Dems actually won one precinct in the 65th that they only win in a presidential year (when they get out the vote) or when a black candidate is running. A very good strategy. The losing candidates will now probably get nice jobs in the TMac administration.

That’s an interesting piece of info. What that tells me is we need to do as the dems do, and get a non black to run in the Dem primaries to demoralize the black vote in the general election.

Exactly right - we need to run candidates against every Dem or otherwise non-Constitutionalist candidate to get our vote up.
