The Ku Klux Klan was formed as a social club by a group of Confederate Army veterans in Pulaski, Tennessee in the winter of 1865-66. The group adopted the name Ku Klux Klan from the Greek word "kyklos," meaning circle, and the English word clan. In the summer of 1867, the Klan became the "Invisible Empire of the South" at a convention in Nashville, Tennessee attended by delegates from former Confederate states. The group was presided over General Nathan Bedford Forrest, who is believed to have been the first Grand Wizard -- the title for the head of the organization.

"Dressed in robes and sheets, intended to prevent identification by the occupying federal troops (and supposedly designed to frighten blacks), the Klan quickly became a terrorist organization in service of the Democratic Party and white supremacy."
In light of the recent statement of Democrat Alan Grayson associating the Tea Party with the KKK, and Joseph Wurzelbacher ("Joe the Plumber") countering by pointing out the historical association between the Democratic Party and the Klan, I thought it might be fun to point out that even a PBS writer recognizes that Wurzelbacher has the better of this debate.
The Klan was to the Democrats what the IRA was to Sein Finn
PBS is saying the KKK was connected to the DEMS ..??
Oh my; this will be a revelation to a lot of people.
Hope the GOP is not too cowardly to point this out the next time we’re accused of being part of the KKK.
I’m not holding my breath .. okay.
It doesn’t matter. That was like...soooo...long ago. The democrats today are so gracious giving out free phones, healthcare, EBT cards. Move along folks. Can’t we all just get along?
It should be noted that the KKK took over the state government in Indiana in the 1920s, supporting Republicans including the governor. To my knowledge that’s the only case where the Klan was tied up with the GOP.
Funny that the left will still hold the US responsible for racist “Americans original sin crap” but will not hold the Democrats responsible for being the party that promote and perpetuated it in the US...
PBS said this? Wow!
Yes, surprise. Lot’s of people don’t realize that the Republican south was once the Dixiecrat south. Of course, since Lincoln was a Republican they were going to be Democrats. A lot has changed. Lincoln today would probably be a Democrat and appalled at recent attempts to disenfranchise poor black voters. Of course, in those days women didn’t have the vote either. Ah, change, got to love it.
Lincoln today would remain a Republican, and if he didn’t ave better things to do would identify you as a lying troll for attempting to perpetuate the falsehood that Republicans are trying to disenfranchise black voters.
Does PBS go on to tell the truth about hoe Kennedy and Johnson found a way to reenslave the blacks through welfare.

It was an insurgency meant to terrorize and control political power. Much as was experienced in Iraq after the war. Maybe the same historians could say that the Civil War lasted 100 years.
We no longer fought AGAINST Iraq when Saddam was toppled. We fought alongside Iraqis.
Robert Byrd was a KKK recruiter. I’ve always wondered about the activities of those he personally brought to the Klan. How many crimes did they commit?
Can’t cash a check without a photo ID.
Can’t board a plane without a photo ID.
Can’t enter a federal courthouse without a photo ID.
But you can ballot stuff all you want and negate the votes of those who are casting the LEGAL ballots.
No it won't. Most people know that the southern democrats left the democrat party because the democrat party implemented civil rights, voting rights, etc. In fact, LBJ once said that he/the dems had lost the south for 2 generations.
This was followed by Nixon's Southern Strategy to bring the south into the GOP.
In some respects, your comments are pretty spot on.
Then you think of the Black unemployment rate and their decreasing standard of living, and you begin to realize the spirit of the KKK is alive and well in the Democrat party.
Who is in charge now? Have Blacks lives been improved? No they’ve just be enslaved more.
If Black would only come to understand this...
Hmmmmmmmm ..??
That doesn’t explain why the dems are so sensitive about it .. they have spent most of their life blaming the repubs. If it was already the repubs .. what would be the point ..????????
We, the repubs, know it was the dems who burnt crosses on the lawns of black people .. not repubs.
The group who left the dems .. left because of the Klan .. not because they were still a part of it; and had hoodwinked the repubs into inviting them to join the GOP.
Sorry, your message is a BIG fat lie .. Good bye!!!
Truth is the only major dem politician to switch was Lester Maddox. All the rest of 'em stayed democrats.
The south did start changing to a two party system - but it was later. Started slowly with strong migration from the North. My mother - who had been a Republican in the north - switched to being a democrat in the 50's South because there was only one party in the South. If you wanted a voice, you had to be a democrat in the South. When enough people moved South to form a Republican party that could win an election or two, my mother - and many like her - switched back to Republican.
The one and only totally racist party in the South was Democrat. Democrats were the KKK, the White Citizens Council and the Sheriffs that kept blacks in line. George Wallace in the school house door, Robert KKK Byrd - powerful Senate leader, Bull Conner with his water hoses, Gov Hollings with his Civil War Battle flag trotted out in the 60's to stick it to civil rights protesters - they were all democrats.
You’d have to assume Joe South was and remained a racist during the southern strategy.
The reality is that the democrats via the klan were enforcing a social order based on racial division in order to remain in power. The civil rights movement was a rebellion of good southerners against this imposed order. They became republican because they left racism behind, not because the democrats had ( the dems still are bigots)
