Is Free Republic worth saving?

Posted on 08/30/2013 9:01:53 PM PDT by The Bat Ladys Husband

My involvement with Free Republic began around 2000 when my wife began her vigil around the Texas governor’s mansion in support of GW against the challenge of Al Gore for the presidency. I generally provided the livelihood for the Bat Lady to be able to protest and surround the mansion against the leftists who were kept at bay across the street. While she was registered in order to post after action reports I was a lurker on the site.

Over the years we have attended rallies and protests and meetings. Other groups of freepers nationwide also held rallies, attended protests, and held vigils- activities that were organized and coordinated through the Free Republic site. After action reports were posted almost daily, report after report from across the country from different freepers describing their activities. Even the term "freeper" came to mean one who actively engaged the left to fight against disinformation. We considered ourselves patriots. While we did not risk our “lives, fortune or sacred honor”, we suffered the slings and arrows of a hostile left in the cause of freedom.

With a few exceptions, the “freeper” of today is merely a couch potato who is content to amuse himself by making snide comments and repartees about current news. Few even support the site monetarily. Free Republic appears to barely be able to keep its head above water and its so-called member freepers are such a non-factor of dissent that unlike in the early year, Rush Limbaugh rarely references the site (although he seldom mentioned it).

Early freeper were the ones who got up off the couch, made their signs and used the leftist tactics of street activism against the left itself. Michelle Malkin, Ann Coulter, and Jonas Goldberg are example of early famous freepers, but Free Republic also had the likes of Basil (Second Amendment Sisters), True black man, Jimmy Valentine’s Brother, Kristin, the entire DC freeper contingent and so many other activists making a difference for conservative causes.

At some point in time, a subgroup, “The Pajama Patrol” arose within Free Republic. What a sad day that was. The mindset of Free Republic turned to the couch potato mentality referred to earlier.

The most current after action report I have seen was my wife’s, The Bat Lady’s report on the May 2013 Tax Day protest. One of the protesters with us was a 90-year-old lady with her handmade sign. If she can do it, why can’t you?

All you new Freepers need to get up off your butt and get out and make a difference. Where are you at the Impeach Obama overpass events? Why aren’t you organizing anti-Syria bombing protest? Why aren’t you marching over Benghazi, the NSA, the IRS or ObamaCare? If you are there why aren’t you posting your reports to inspire and motivate others? You are not the only reader of FR in your city. Find the others and get together. Act in concert. After 13 years, the Bat Lady and I are still in contact with those we met on the front lines.

DC Freepers maintained vigils at VP Gore's house, and prevented code pink from vilifying our troops at Walter Reed every week for years. Freepers once actively protested the left and got Clinton impeached. Some even say we were the Paul Revere of the TEA party,

Is your barcalounger so dear or American Idol so sweet as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it Almighty God.

It is time for freepers to rededicate themselves to the vision that Jim Robinson created. All the clever comments you attach to the threads are less than useless. It is time once again to become a large thorn in the side of those who do not strive for the American Ideal and be the activists we once were. If you cannot post an after action report “go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. …May posterity forget that ye were our countrymen.”

“It does not take a majority to prevail ... but rather an irate, tireless minority, keen on setting brushfires of freedom in the minds of men.” Samuel Adams

In answer to my own question: yes it is worth saving if its members make a difference.

“I take my son for a ride down the twisty road. He waves his 4 year old head and I get a red ocean of vomit.”

When our sons were in grade school and middle school, they had friend, whose age was between theirs. This friend did a lot of things with them from baseball to day trips on the weekends.

On one of those day trips, we found out that he would get car sick to the where we were concerned about his health.

Flash forward a decade or so, and he became a pilot for the Highway patrol.

I had a discussion with him later on re why he didn’t get motion sickness while piloting his copter. He said that he could see and control his movement. He still got car sick if he rode in the back of a vehicle. His other trick was to hydrate himself before a flight, during the flight and afterwards.

Flash forward to this past May, and a younger female relative was accepted at a private school. The road from her home is about 24 miles of twists and turns. Her Mother is a typical soccer mom re driving and no moss ever gathers under her tires. This younger relative had some severe bouts of car sickness to and from her new school as they went for her many events before school officially started.

We discussed the hydration with her mother and a few other points like: only riding in the front seat, never looking at her Mother or to the side while riding, never reading nor texting, closing her eyes in the really bad curves and going to sleep if she could.

These actions worked, and the only time she has gotten car sick was riding in the back of a smaller car between two other girls.

More comments to come once I have read the thread.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Don’t bother reading it. I did that for you.
1/2 of replies flame on your hubby.
1/2 support his sentiments.
1/2 are flaming on each other. “You’re a dink.” “No, YOU’RE a dink”.
Sooo. A typical classic FR thread. Congrats to Mr. Bat Lady.
The Bat Lady herself has been here since December 2000.
The Bat Ladys Husband HAS been involved with FR since 2000 through his wife.
DUH.
Looks like he’s decided to get directly involved in his own right, and I welcome him.
How much per year do you contribute, oh holy one?
Not that it is any of your business but we have given $20.00 every single Freepathon since 2000 except when we went Galt at the beginning of the year. Since we didn't know how long it would take us to "get back to normal" we sent $100. to cover us for a while. I NEVER mind that Jim Rob makes some $ and I HOPE HE DOES.
We don't get the newspaper, never spend $ on Time magazine or whatever passes for info out there in the left world. This IS the place to go for info. Thank you JimRob from the bottom of our hearts for starting FR and keeping it going.
#79 Whatever happens, if you want to save Free Republic, do NOT allow your wife to sing.
How did you know that I sing badly? It's pretty true, (but I did get the reference). LOL
#98 Every FReeper that gets involved and is interested in real world news owes this site no less than 5 bucks a month.
I guess we did average $6.60 for 13 years so we are OK there.
#100 I think BL and BLH BOTH owe this forum a personal apology, frankly.
I am not going to apologize to you or anyone except maybe JimRob. But why should I? My hubby has the right to his opinion. It isn't always mine, we come here every day for info and we pay money for the opportunity. This is still America to speak our minds.... for now. We just want ALL the readers to help in the fight. Yes, it can be with $5.00, freeping on the streets or calls to Congress critters but really how many of you DO that? Raise your hands.
If you don't, the Capitol switchboard is 202-225-3121. Stop and put that in your phone now and when you get mad at what some Senator or Congressman does or says, call them. I don't just call mine, I call them ALL.
Yes, it takes time, yes, we are the producers but if we don't fight NOW for this country and the grandkids ask you to tell them about what America used to be like and they wonder why they didn't get that country, are you going to say I didn't have time to make phone calls to my Congressman.
Are you going to say, "I voted every 2 years, I did my part." Really?
To those who help with the voting, Thank God for you!
But truthfully those Congress critters don't fear us because they don't hear from us. If every single reader here did this, they would fear us. I had Lloyd Doggett tell me to my face that he would NEVER MEET WITH ME, why did he know my name? Because I called his office every day for 10 years.
#133 I've tried everything. Can’t get give them money.
I used to just mail a money order, but now just send a check. The address is on the bottom of every page.
#154 So, you see, I am here but I'm everywhere at the same time. I know there are Freepers who do the same, promoting/working for, freedom and individual liberties every day.
Yes, Free Republic is important and helps all of us continue to work to pull our country back from the brink of destruction and we wouldn't have Free Republic without Jim Robinson.
Good for you, wish there were more who did, I think that is Hubby's point. But the street theatre is important too (FOR THOSE WHO ARE ABLE,OF COURSE). The left HATES when we use their tactics against them
#186 Sorry, dude, the Pajama Patrol brought down Dan Rather.
No, I think is was Freeper Buckwheat who did that.
#218 The only one I’ve seen who can really do much about his own ads is Drudge, and that is because he has volume enough to run single ads outside the mainstream. And he got there by cheating: every ten minutes or so the page refreshes, and each refresh counts as a new hit, counting up money.
I HATE that, I have sent Drudge messages about not refreshing me before I finish the page, I just leave the site at that point but good to know why he does it. We aren't asking FR to take ads, we are proud to go to a site that is supported by the readers only. We are capitalists and it brings us joy if JimRob does well personally for the difference he has made in saving the USA.
#232 I was about to do a dozen different things you mentioned, but I got sucked into this ridiculous thread and its comments. So, I blame you. Snide enough?
LOL We also had a huge day planned and both of us are glued to this screen posting our comments back to ya'll.
#248 snip... I, for one, would be devastated if FR were not around. The knowledge that I have gained is priceless and allows me to be a thorn in lots of people’s side because I never hesitate to share what I learn. May God continue to shine down on you all and bless Jim for all his hard work.
Ditto #248 It's worth reading this entire post again.
#266 thanks Mozilla for posting a link to my posts and I thought I didn't post much anymore. LOL
#21 How did you get a picture of me??????? Seriously, I have that outfit and unfortunately that pic resembles me. LOL Love ya all
Malware is, and malware in ads is a problem.
As for me? One infection in 10 or so years, and it was from an ad on a very mainstream site. I was between my old standalone adblocker and any of the modern integrated ones.
Bad enough some ad company serves an infected ad slipped in by an unscrupulous sort...can you imagine the outright targeting that would happen if it were known ads would be here?
This is an opinion ... mine. The Christians among us are many. Not so much the left. We abide or attempt to follow the words of Jesus Christ, turn the other cheek, pray for them that spitefully use you, give your cloak to him that asks for it, and walk a mile (or two) with the one that requests it, etc.
We do not behave as the left behaves. Lies, distortions, attacks,... alas it is necessary to continually keep explaining how we are being misinterpreted deliberately. Anyone can see it works for the progressives, liberals, to attack the right this way. Our very Christianity is used against us effectively.. MO!
And all this behavior is paramount to the result. How to do it differently? and stay true to our LORD. Politics and honesty, love, respect ... do not mix, apparently.
Txrangerette, I forgot to ping you my lengthy response but I thank you for remembering me and defending my existence. LOL
R2, I appreciate your reading it for me, tho I didn’t see that until I had read the whole thing, darn, could have saved time.
null and void, he doesn’t drive me bats it is the other way round. Seriously, when I joined I hadn’t read the site much and didn’t understand to make up a cool handle but I had been “the Bat Lady” of Austin for a long time and used that nickname.
I was bummed that I hadn’t chosen something like “read the Constitution”. Years later a freeper friend Gracey had a bat in her apt. She called me and asked about my name, I said I would be right there to help. Working with wildlife rescue and taking rabies shots for 18 years I was able to take that bat safely away from her space.
So it isn’t a cool political name but it IS me.
Have been reading and lurking on Free Republic since 1990ish. Many posters and other changes have developed along the way.
Yes it is worth saving.
It has taken on much an air of social media in the last couple of years or more. MO.
I would also freeze small water bottles and use those to roll under my foot. And the golf ball is a good idea... I keep one of these porcupine massage balls under my desk at work and roll it under my foot when I'm working on the computer:
Oh, and the the running shoes, YES! About 6 months before the PF pain started, I had switched from Asics (the brand I had been using for about 12 years) to a Brooks shoe. For some reason I didn't connect the pain to that, but after 8 months of torture, I finally realized that the shoes could be the source. So I switched back to the Asics Kayano and wore the splint at night and it took just a few days to start getting some relief.
How's that for a thread hijack?
That’s pretty much what I assumed you did to get the Bat Lady monicker.
We have one here in San Jose who tours schools introducing the children to bats.
A simple stretching of the calf muscles will relieve PF. Stand three feet from a wall. Lean forward to the wall keeping your heels on the ground and stretching the calf. Do this twice a week and you’re good to go.
