I would also freeze small water bottles and use those to roll under my foot. And the golf ball is a good idea... I keep one of these porcupine massage balls under my desk at work and roll it under my foot when I'm working on the computer:

Oh, and the the running shoes, YES! About 6 months before the PF pain started, I had switched from Asics (the brand I had been using for about 12 years) to a Brooks shoe. For some reason I didn't connect the pain to that, but after 8 months of torture, I finally realized that the shoes could be the source. So I switched back to the Asics Kayano and wore the splint at night and it took just a few days to start getting some relief.

How's that for a thread hijack?

A simple stretching of the calf muscles will relieve PF. Stand three feet from a wall. Lean forward to the wall keeping your heels on the ground and stretching the calf. Do this twice a week and you’re good to go.
