The Egyptian Military just made a publc statement on Egyptian TV and it appears the country is close to another military coup:
In other words, do as the people want, calm this down now, or we will step in within 48 hours.
It was bound to fall apart sooner or later. I’m not convinced our diplomacy has necessarily been in the best interest of this country, or even the ones we choose to meddle in.
I can offer a similar story about F-16 maintenance in the Egyptian Air Force, as told by a Lockheed-Martin rep. One of their instructors was providing an intro level class on the jet’s avionics. He removed a couple of exterior panels to access some of the line replaceable units, then excused himself (briefly) to go to the other side of the hangar and get an item he needed.
When he returned, he found the Egyptians had removed several more panels and were practicing nailing them back in place. Of course, the panels are secured by specially-made fasteners, but the EAF techs figured what the heck, a hammer and nails will work just as well. In the process, they destroyed several LRUs and generated thousands of dollars in damage, paid for by the US taxpayer.
The EAF has a few decent pilots, but their maintenance is absolute crap. It’s probably a good thing they (typically) get destroyed on the ground in the opening stages of a conflict, because they don’t have the capability to generate significant numbers of sorties over a period of days or weeks. Of course, the Dear Leader has us on the same path, with about one-third of the combat squadrons in the Air Force and Navy now grounded by sequestration.
“Look for next-door Israel to be on high alert.”
I think Israel set this in motion.
Do you think that Egypt will try to attack Israel?
I think they finally ran through their kit backlog - supposedly the latest deal that Obama pushed through after Mubarak was removed was half kits, half completed tanks (50 or 60 of each) - the kits did not have the DU armor enhancements and some other goodies found on US-issue M1A1s, but I think the complete tanks they have either just gotten or are to get soon are US-issue tanks with the full suite of goodies.
I dare obama to walk in and show support for his butcher friend.
Interesting about the Egyptian military and their attempted sacking by Morsi. Indeed, the MSM did not report that.
The head of the Army there is a US Trained General. I dont think he would be worse than the MB. There are so many US trained folks in the Eqyptian Military, I don’t think there is a ton of support for a fanatical Islamic government there without wide, wide public support.
I see this as very serious. But I do not see it as bad.
I strongly suspect that Morsi was gearing up for an eventual move in that direction, and the military is in the process of forestalling him. They may have, behind the scenes, been responsible for the demonstrations.
Morsi is at heart, an ideologue. The military leaders are more realistic, and certainly do NOT want to see 90% of Egypt's productivity, such as it is, damaged, if not destroyed outright.
What we see in the news (such as it is) is more than likely illusion, masking the *real* issues at stake, which if truly known would terrify most people in the implications...

Of course not, he’s enjoying his time in southern Africa as the northern part of the continent is exploding. Also, he tells the media to behave and they comply like the lemmings that they are.

I also see it as serious, but not bad.
I watched the statement live on Al-Jazeera toda, and the tones of the officer reading the statement were measured and even, not at all emotional. The network exhibited a photo of the officer’s head in his dress uniform, possibly many years out of date.
The Army is better for Egypt, and for the world, than any other would-be final authority in Egypt.
I like the 48 hour deadline - seems measured carefully.
Good luck, Egypt!
I have some skin in the game as a shareholder of Centamin, a large producing gold mine in southern Egypt. The stock price has been knocked down hard by the Islamist idiots in power trying to create commercial uncertainties.
Wasn’t it commonly reported that soon after he took office, Morsi forced the retirement of the top army generals. Supposedly the military is now being run by Islamists. Could this all be a ruse for the military to clamp down on the opposition?
I am sure the Egyptian Military is going to remedy this situation already made worst by Obama to save the foreign aid which they depend. If not, Egyptians will starve and American's largest Embassy presence in the Middle East will be unsafe for the family members and local national staff to remain. This will render America's diplomacy, while tainted with Obama's socialist stench, completely inept.
We may yet witness the end of an ear in Egypt where American Aid no longer allows peace for the Suez Canal or Jordan. It is sad that a president puts his Party about the good of Country but that is political warfare the democrats have wrought against their opposition since the Viet Nam War protestor's seized control of the democrat party.
Obama has no grasp of the natural order of the world and only believes he can control everything with sweeping edicts. This will be his undoing in world politics.

(Live Thread) Egypt: American Killed During Violent Clashes (Egypt about to blow up)
Background:
This above thread morphed into a live thread at the beginning of the demonstrations. It started with post 100. Spectacular photos, informative posts, tweets, any TV coverage (pitiful as it is) and regular live updates.
Any newer threads from yesterday [or today] on Egypt are also linked in this thread.
He should fly in and speak to the crowds in the Square and use his teleprompters so he doesn't make any flubs. He can make sure he gets all the phrases right about homo rights and how he stands behind Morsi, the Arab Spring, the Muslim Brotherhood, Al Qaeda in Libya and Syria, and the crushing of personal freedom and whatever religious and legal liberty still remains in Egypt.
Just think of the great media attention he would get from our adoring media!
The writer is in error.
There will be no coup, there will be a restoration.
The current status is anomaly
Not quite what it might seem-—The Egypts have a license to manufacture their own M1 Abrams and so far they have made something over 750. The ones they make are diesel, not turbine powered, and don’t have run-and-shoot capability. The few that we’ve given them also don’t have the good options. And remember this: as good as they might be they are no match for the Israeli 155’s. Egyption Abrams will never leave Egypt.
