CENTER CITY - June 5, 2013 (WPVI) -- A building collapsed at the corner of 22nd and Market streets in Center City Philadelphia, trapping a number of a people under the rubble.
The 4-story building, which was connected to a Salvation Army Thrift Store on the southeast corner, collapsed at 10:45 Wednesday morning.
The collapse brought down part of the thrift store and what appears to be converted row homes attached to the back of the building.
Two victims have been taken to Hahnemann University Hospital and three others were transported to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. All five victims are said to be adults. There is no word at this time on the severity of their injuries.
Emergency crews are on the scene continuing to work feverishly to find survivors.
There is no word on exactly what caused the four-story building to collapse.
Commissioner Ayers initially said the collapse happened at an apartment building, but that has turned out to not be the case.

Dems will find some way to either blame Bush, the sequestration, Tea Partiers or Glenn Beck.

Prayers Up for our Fellow Citizens.
There was no talk on the video of an explosion, and it doesn’t look like it was. It really is odd to see most of the building completely in rubble below knee height and parts of it still standing three stories high. Maybe I am seeing a couple of different buildings.
It was Karl Rove and Halliburton.
Prayers sent.

Was listening to someone on one of the live feeds saying they were taking pics yesterday because the building looked so odd, unsafe. Someone was doing brick work. Didn’t catch it all.

Where is Bush?
The structural engineers will have to get in and look at the details, but an older, lightly-constructed brick building can indeed have a catastrophic failure like this due to deterioration of the supporting structures. And once the framework starts down, the collapse accelerates.
Read this book for details, especially the chapter on the collapse of the Civic Tower in Pavia, Italy - death from old age.

That’s an excellent book.
I hope they find everyone and no one is seriously hurt. Not a pleasant thing to go through, I am sure.
Nothing in the book about 'why trees fall down' but it struck me as funny.
Actually this will somehow get blamed on Gov. Corbett and his reluctance to spend enough of our money.
My wife and I were sitting on our deck back in the 90’s and watched as a neighbor’s huge, aged but perfectly healthy oak tree just toppled over.
We had had a lot of rain previously and the ground was saturated. The tree had no ‘tap root’ and it just fell over............
