Matt Ridley, author of The Red Queen, Genome, The Rational Optimist and other books, dropped by Reason's studio in Los Angeles last month to talk about a curious global trend that is just starting to receive attention. Over the past three decades, our planet has gotten greener!
Even stranger, the greening of the planet in recent decades appears to be happening because of, not despite, our reliance on fossil fuels. While environmentalists often talk about how bad stuff like CO2 causes bad things to happen like global warming, it turns out that the plants aren't complaining.

Am I the only one annoyed by the increasing dominance of video vs. text communication?
I understand a lot of people don’t like to read, but I see no reason a transcript can’t be posted, or at least linked, for those of us who don’t have 19 minutes to spend watching a video.
It’s not just you...I’m bored to tears listening to someone jabber on endlessly for information I could take in more quickly and completely by reading.
Then there’s those of us on dialup that not only don’t have the 19 minutes for the jabber, but not the time to download the video much less IF WE CAN even download it.
Unfortunately dialup is so slow it is video/audio unfriendly.
Much prefer text.
We’d have to move back to the city, or pay excessive fees to have ability for video where we are.
We appear to be part of a diminishing minority. More and more sites are dominated by video rather than text. I have no problem with video when it presents information more effectively than text.
But more often, as you say, it’s just poorly shot and edited footage of someone talking about what could be read more efficiently.
At the same time and in the reverse situation, my daughters will text me back and forth for 10 minutes rather than spend 3 minutes talking on the phone.
Very weird.
Ditto that, X10. Videos are huge time wasters, and they have to be REALLY, REALLY enticing to get me to even glance at them. Whoever said a picture is worth a thousand words was obviously a very slow reader.
Only because they don't understand the most basic science. Fifth grade carbon cycle material. The words "environmentalist" or "climatologist" can be readily replaced with the words "ignoramus" and "grant money driven quack".
"Meteorologist" is still a respectable title and, along with Geologist, Biologist, and Paleontologist one that seems to never get mentioned as an authority in the the pulp fiction panic mongering press. Why? Because if you ask a trained meteorologist about AGW he will probably either laugh in your face or cry in disgust and contempt.

Almost every time I am directed to a video, I ignore it and move on. That is a method of communication for entertainment. If you want to convey information, it should be in writing.
Just think, all that carbon is all locked up in those “fossil fuels” and plants can’t get to it to use it until we combine the carbon with oxygen to produce proper plant food.
Could be the answer to the eternal question "Why are we here?"
Videos are mostly intended to arouse emotions and negate the opportunity for critical thinking. That’s why why fringe political and religious movements rely on them, sometimes exclusively.

I agree. When they will not include a transcript, I assume they do not want any real analysis of the information they are presenting.
There is also the unfortunate fact that a large percentage of our population is unable or unwilling to read or read well. If you wish to communicate with these people, you're more or less stuck with video or audio.
Yep. It has its place. It does depend on whether the intention is to keep the audience trapped at the emotional level.
