During the hearing for the states proposed college campus gun ban, rape survivor Amanda Collins bravely shared her story of survival.
...
who explained how she wished shed had a firearm to defend herself from her rapist. Said Collins:
As I live with the memory, weighted with the question of my life: What would have been different if I had been carrying the weapon I was licensed to carry that night? I would like to leave you with a question: How does rendering me defenseless protect you against a violent crime?
Hudak conflated martial arts with firearm defense without realizing that one of these tactics requires close contact with an attacker, a physical deflection. Hudaks prejudiced characterization of women and firearms is reminiscent of Colorado Rep. Joe Salazars sexist remark that women were simply too hysterical to own firearms.
...
Hudaks argument that a woman could be disarmed and her firearm used on her flies in the face of FBI crime statistics and presupposes that the woman wont fire and/or is incapable of properly using a firearm. See, Amanda Collins was overpowered, disarmed, and left to be a victim. By Nevada lawmakers. Not her rapist. Just what Hudak said would happen, though not exactly.
Quite a dangerous thing to disarm women and create more rape victims based on a dangerous, baseless assumption.

Unfortunately, we are a violent culture. That said, I believe every responsible person above the age of 18 should be allowed to open or conceal carry. As we all know, more guns equals less violent crime. I read EVERY day about someone defending their lives. No guns equals more crime...just look around the world.
The stats (including FBI) are out there but the FEEL GOOD liberals think with their hearts rather than their heads. They will never change this gun culture that was determined by our Revolution against tyrannical King George. We are who we are and no amount of wishful peacenik thinking is going to change that.
Pens? Girls just want to have guns

If you stood face to face with a rapist in the middle of the night, what would you prefer to use to defend yourself: a ballpoint pen or a handgun?
About two weeks ago, the Colorado House of Representatives passed a statewide ban on concealed-carry weapons on public college campuses, and the bill is now being considered by the Colorado Senate. In response to questions concerning women and their right to defend themselves, legislators were quick to come up with silly, petty alternatives to prevent a rapist from attacking them.
Representative Joe Salazar claimed that passive resistance is the way to go. While speaking on the House floor, he stated women dont need guns because we have call boxes safe zones whistles.
But how safe are you in a safe zone? And whats a rape whistle really going to do if youre about to be assaulted with no one else in your vicinity?
Colorado State Senator Jessie Ulibarri suggested that during the 2011 Tucson, Ariz., shooting, some people were able to defend themselves using ballpoint pens instead of guns. Representative Paul Rosenthal furthered these ridiculous alternative strategies by saying the buddy system and learning judo were adequate forms of self-defense.
It seems its male politicians who are at the forefront of taking away a womans right to own a concealed-carry weapon and telling her to use weaker or silly alternatives.
Not only are politicians suggesting ineffective ways to defend yourself, but several universities have listed ineffective tips to dispel attackers.
For instance, the University of Colorado at Colorado Springss public safety department urged students to tell your attacker that you have a disease or are menstruating. According to the department, using your bodily fluids is a very effective way to protect yourself: Vomiting or urinating may also convince the attacker to leave you alone.
At Oregon State University, the public safety department suggests students take 16 to 20 hours of training in martial arts or street fighting. The state university also claims that you can discourage your attacker by claiming to be sick or pregnant and fainting or acting insane.
Im sorry, but dont politicians and universities support female empowerment? I dont know about you, but I wouldnt feel empowered to protect myself if I knew menstruation was my only weapon. And urinating may not even stop a sick, deranged rapist from assaulting me but a bullet would.
As a woman, I feel offended that politicians expect me to use such impractical, hopeless methods to defend myself from someone who wants to take away my dignity. According to many universities, Im just a young girl who should act insane to prevent rapists from violating me. As many feminists may say, This is anti-choice.
From my life experiences, empowerment never came in the form of urinating, menstruating or acting pregnant. It came in the form of shooting a Beretta DT10 for the first time.
Regardless of whether a woman wants to own a concealed-carry weapon on a college campus, politicians and institutions shouldnt be making the decision for women nor telling them they can just pretend to menstruate and everything will be fine.
The fact is, gun ownership among women is on the rise. A Gallup poll, from 2005 to 2011, showed the proportion of females who had guns in their households rose 10 percent. Today, almost a quarter of American women own guns.
Sooner or later, we need to realize taking guns away from the law-abiding does not prevent criminals from possessing guns. The idea that women should play dumb or stand back when they are about to be raped only perpetuates sexist judgment. By simply telling women to use pathetic, unsuccessful forms of self-defense, we are only weakening the American womans mentality when she is faced with her violent, brutal attacker.

Agreed. I was afraid a weapon could be taken from me, and used against me, so I took martial arts. What I learned doing TKD with men, is that I never, never, never want to have to fight a man. A small man with my level of skills and viciousness is still stronger than me. A big man is much stronger than me. A big fat man doesn’t even feel most of my blows and he can just squash me. If attacked I would far rather shoot him from ten feet away.
Martial arts is better than nothing but it’s no equalizer.
The list of those who would gladly prevent the innocent from defending ourselves has grown, my FRiends:

Vote them ALL out!
If a ‘Pubbie said this, he’d be publicly eviscerated on TV. But a Democrat gets away with it.
Ain’t Media Bias great?
Only if you’re talking about the “ruling class”. There, there’s no cure but to eliminate them from positions of power.
However, there’s nothing like a bit of hunger in a “work or go hungry” situation to turn a “liberal” into a conservative.
Notice how most of ‘em are female?
bump
The gun grabbers are deranged assholes.
Too bad they won’t have Senate hearings that concern the children killed by illegals.
Once people are dependent upon the State to protect them, the govt can extort unlimited money by simply having police be the first to be cut in any budget shortfall.
By that logic, policewomen should not be armed because they will just have their guns taken. Or you could just train people in weapons retention techniques.
I'd just say "Stupid". She's not smart enough to be evil.
That having been said, all she's capable of doing is repeating the mantra. She can't question the theology, since that would risk her social status, bring scorn upon her from people whose opinion she values, and frankly, bring into question everything she believes.
Truly, liberalism is a harsh religion, and its master is an unforgiving one. Makes me glad to be a conservative, and strong enough to form my own opinions.
Ripley: Yes, there are, aren't there?
Welcome to reality Ms. Hudak!
Hey Hudak, the 1st Amendment protects your stupidity, and the 2nd protects us from it.
Another case of projection by RATs. It is the RATs that wage war on women. It is RATs that are anti-semitic. It is RATs that segregationists.
But then, I’m preaching to the choir.
If this were the other way around, Dems would be all over TV claiming Pubs “want women to be raped”.
One wonders what the headlines would be if a male Republican said this.
As with everything in life, it is a choice.
You either CHOOSE to obey them... Or you don’t.
You are the master of your own life and your fate - not these political martinets.
Choices have consequences, obviously.
But the consequences of being disarmed, attacked, possibly murdered also puts your FAMILY at risk - your attacker/killer now has your car keys, your address, your cellphone, house keys - access to your family.
By being disarmed, you leave your loved ones vulnerable.
If armed, you at least have a fighting chance to survive. Disarmed, you’re definitely finished.
Life is a series of choices. Which choice you make affects more people than just yourself.
Carry anyway.
If we are to call ourselves Free People, we should act and behave as Free People - in spite of what the assholes of our society try to dictate to us.
I blame the racist republicans for not passing a budget in the Senate and now we have to make an equester!
(did you post that one on FR? The comments would be priceless....)
