This is just the latest revelation in the stealth inflation and food fraud theme I have written about frequently in recent months. The non-profit group Oceana took samples of 1,215 fish sold in the U.S. and genetic tests found that that 59% of those labeled tuna were mislabeled.
It seems that white tuna should be avoided in particular as 84% of fish samples labeled 'white tuna' were actually escolar, a fish that can cause prolonged, uncontrollable, oily anal leakage.
Oh and if you live in my hometown of New York City, you should pay particular attention:
Big Apple has big problem with seafood fraud: 94 percent of tuna and more than three quarters of sushi samples in New York City mislabeled.Of the 142 fish samples collected in New York, 39 percent were mislabeled. New York City led the nation with the highest occurrence of mislabeled salmon as well as the highest amount of fraud among salmon collected from grocery stores and restaurants.
The full report from Oceana can be found here.
Bon appétit!
If you Right Wing Nuts would only pay more taxes so we could hire more inspectors ... and drink less soda!
If nothing else, this thread has given me the name of a new punk rock band.
It also reminds me of a restaurant experience when I was a kid. I ordered red snapper, but got some random fish. When I complained that it wasn’t snapper, the waiter said, “It may seem different because most places serve it in the shell.” I may have been 9, but I knew it wasn’t red snapper and that fish of any sort was never served “in the shell.”
Tuna = horse meat
oily anal leakage ping.
that’s a first for both of us, yes?
‘The tuna just doesn’t taste as good.’
That’s probably because it’s dolphin-free tuna. :=)
Zer0's holding another press conference?
Starkist is now Pigeon of the Sea? Sorry Charlie
Well, I'm glad that mystery has been solved. Hello real tuna, goodbye skidmarks.
What next? Taco Hell is serving horse, and Chicken of the Sea ain’t tuna???
What is KFC serving?
Well, Mayor, we put the cat back into the catfish. Meow Mix!
How does a can get mislabeled in a store? I thought it was all labelled at the factory?
Do they mean that the factory is sending out cans of tuna that mainly contain other fish.
If that is the case, that is fraud, not mislabeling. They are misrepresenting their product, not mislabeling it.
Getting closer and closer to Soylent Green.
Actors Ted_Danson"Ted Danson and Sam Waterston are both on Oceanas board of directors, but a variety of notable celebrities are supporters of the organization. Mad Men actress January Jones is the face of Oceana's "Scared for Sharks" campaign, and Private Practice star Kate Walsh filmed a PSA about sea turtles for Oceana. In 2010, Entourage actor Adrian Grenier swam with Atlantic bluefin tuna and filmed a PSA about the endangered fish. 'Glee' actress Jenna Ushkowitz has also worked closely with Oceana. On her birthday in 2011, she asked for donations to be made towards the organization instead of birthday gifts. Most recently, she teamed up with Closets for Causes and donated several pieces from her personal closet to raise money for the organization
In addition, U.S. swimmer Aaron Peirsol has led an open-water swim event for Oceana since 2007 called The Race For the Oceans. Other Oceana supporters include Ben Harper, Morgan Freeman, and End of the Line author Charles Clover.
Ted Danson founded the American Oceans Campaign in 1987.
Wasn’t there a fatal accident of one of those Tuna factory workers who got caught in the mixer at the Tuna production plant ? just saying... it ain’t tuna...
Thank you FR, I have never laughed so hard in my life.
If you check the labels there are only two or three tunas without soy filler anyway. So your getting oily leakage plus man boobs.
