Gun ownership is a hot topic right now. There is no doubt our constitutional right to bear arms is under assault. Legal gun owners are being singled out, scrutinized and publicly black-listed.
The imminent threat of more gun bans and restrictions has prompted many law-abiding citizens to evaluate their arsenals. The newly proposed “ban bills” have compelled many to stock up on certain guns, accessories and calibers of ammunition.
Though certainly not intentional, this is the first thing Obama has done in five years to stimulate our economy. The line to get into the gun show near where I live this past weekend was a quarter mile long. Many people who have never even owned guns are among the throngs of new gun shop customers. The firearms business is booming!

Granted, there is no one gun that excels in every category: self-defense, large and small game hunting, hostile combat, maneuverability, weight, accuracy, affordability, durability and ease of use.
I look at guns, however, from the perspective of long-term survival. I buy guns for their function. If I could only have one gun to meet as many of my survival needs as possible, it would without question be a Ruger 10/22 rifle. I am not sure about the rifle but that looks like a pair of 38’s to me!
I think Bill Ruger’s Son took over but I am not sure of that.
Anyway the company is much more gun enthusiast friendly now.

Fortunately, I anticipated this sort of thing long ago - my go-to weapon is a Saiga 12 shotgun.
A highly opinionated and sometimes irascible man, Ruger had little interest in what he saw as an American red herring–zealous gun control. "The people who are demanding more laws to control guns should instead be demanding more laws to control thugs," he once said. He lauded the right of millions of Americans who live in semi-developed or rural areas to defend themselves, a concept lost on (sub)urbanites trained to dial 911. More to the point, he declared, "The [Constitution] says what it says. ‘The right to bear arms shall not be infringed.’ If you can’t live with that, then you shouldn’t be trying to be an American citizen."
I’ve heard a discussion of this. An analysis was done of the various calibers that people have been shot with and the results thereof.
It turns out the .22 didn’t perform much lower than the 9mm.

Amusingly, since Ruger died and the new management team took over, they’re now making more and more and more ‘evil’ weapons that ol’ Bill would not have approved of. They ship their new AR-15 variant with 30 rounders and are cranking out 25s for their .22s. The AR-15 variant isn’t even ban-state neutered.

There’s degrees of trauma, and locations where you can get immediate incapacitation. Head shots, spine shots, and breaking key bones can immediately incapacitate someone. The .22lr cannot reliably break bones. Very often it will glance off bones. A headshot with a .22lr will very often glance off the skull. Ribs can also deflect the round. If you shoot someone with a .45, it will not be stopped by bone and will penetrate deep.
I’ve talked to EMTs on this subject and while they say the .22lr can be extremely deadly, it doesn’t do it in a timely fashion. Hence my comment about bleeding out. In a self defense situation the target needs to be put down pronto. If he happens to die later after he hurts you, it isn’t terribly important.
Nothing performs as well as a shotgun, then, given the criteria that you’ve given.
