Sheriff: Put guns in schools (Ohio)

As sheriff patrols will increase around Butler County schools in the wake of the Connecticut mass shootings, Sheriff Richard K. Jones is proposing placing weapons in schools — an idea he first pushed for after the Virginia Tech shooting in 2007.

In light of the recent tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., Jones said today that he would like to see legislation introduced that would mandate placing armed personnel in all public and private Ohio schools, from elementary schools through colleges.

Jones said he believes putting guns in schools — either assigned law enforcement officers or select teachers or administrators trained in firearms techniques — “makes the most sense.”

“I believe having armed personnel readily available to immediately respond would be a deterrent in and of itself,” Jones said. “If a potential shooter knows someone might react within seconds rather than having a 15- to 30-minute or more window of opportunity to wreak havoc on as many victims as possible, they might rethink their plan.”

Effective immediately, all sheriff’s deputies in the patrol unit are being instructed to “substantially increase their visibility at all schools” within their beats.

Jones said there will be more frequent patrols through school parking lots and on various other school grounds. Also, at least two additional marked units will be deployed during normal school hours to specifically patrol school grounds.

While the added patrols or his “guns in schools” proposal is not a guarantee a school shooting would never take place, Jones hopes it can limit a potential similar tragedy.

“Most of the recent victims were young, innocent children. We have to take whatever steps we can to protect our future,” Jones said. “Kids should be safe at school. We have to do anything we can to try to keep them that way.”

I posted this early this morning...

Except from: http://www.backwoodshome.com/articles2/ayoob81.html

[Israel began the program of armed citizen guards in the schools after the Maalot massacre in the 1970s, when a large number of children were slain in a terrorist incident. The volunteer parents work in plain clothes, armed with concealed semi-automatic pistols, and are trained by Israel’s home guard. It is significant that in the more than a quarter century between Maalot and the incident mentioned above when the citizen guards shot down the terrorist in the school in 2002, not a single child was murdered in an Israeli school!]

My thoughts:

If we use volunteer parents, retired military & police officers - and give those people firearm training every 6 months, and reward them with a tax break for service - then the schools become a “hardened” target and will deter (not completely stop) these types of violent acts.

Second, the Main Street Media need to curb their addiction on covering such incidents 24/7 - getting facts wrong, stating info that comes out to be erroneous, and basically stop giving a voice to these idiots.

We, as US Citizens, must take the time to get involved in our children’s lives - their school system - and the community as a whole. Those person’s that may be mentally ill need to be identified - treated by professionals, but also that teaching our children that those that our different are NOT to be bullied, made fun of, but given respect, even thought some might not understand it - but they should not be treated like monsters because of how they were born or the home environment may have produced the behavior everyone else sees.

In the end, being proactive is much better than allowing the MSM to invade the community after a shooting just to be “The First’ to cover an incident - they don’t care - and we should - before the fact.

From what I gather around the 'net, the photo provided is not entirely accurate.

The lady with the gun isn't a teacher. She is an aide of some sort - parent, volunteer.

We also don't know the circumstances of where the photo was taken. It may or may not be on school grounds.

But here is my first hand experience: when I visited Israel in the 1980's our tour group was at an outdoor historical place (Bet Shean, IIRC) and in attendance was a group of 20 or so middle school aged children. Nearby was a nice young fellow in civilian clothes with an M1 carbine. I engaged him in conversation and asked what was going on with the gun. He said (in a Bronx accent) "I'm a guard for these children's field trip."

My understanding is at the schools themselves they are fenced in and have guards of some sort (armed or otherwise). Individuals need to present ID.

I like the idea of what the photo presents, but we have to get our facts straight.

Indeed, sheriff.

The gun is the solution to this.

The gun is the tool and the means of freedom.

The liberal and their love of control, power and death is why our society is unraveling before our eyes.

Someone pointed out that having the teachers armed may not be the best option, since they are in situations where accidents (kids are curious) could have bad results, but more so because they are not free to roam the buildings and appear at random (and, for an armed intruder, unpredictable) places.

Trained parents and volunteers, however, would be a great idea.

It doesn’t matter where the picture was taken. The ages of those young kids are all I need to know (although I appreciate the sense of your comment in that the leftists will jump on any perceived erroneous statement to prove how “dumb” we all are).

HOORAY for Butler!

I taught school there in the late ‘60’s and the old schoolhouse in Bellville is one of the oldest continually used school buildings in the nation.

A close friend still subs there occasionally - good to know she will be safe....

Now, for the rest of the nation.....

Can we start a movement to counter what the libs are doing?

At least some officials like this one have it right.

Good for him! God bless him and speed his course to keep our children safe.

Not true. Locked access in every classroom with arms taken home at night. I can tell you are perhaps not familiar with the safe use of arms. Do not worry. it is for the best for teachers to be so trained, they have the “in loco parentis” duty to protect. Give them the tools!!!

Nonsense. Actually, without going into details, I am VERY well trained in the tactical use of firearms.

I assume by “locked access” you mean teachers have them locked in a drawer. Most teachers I know would not want to have anything to do with this, let alone taking them home at night.

So.. the first thing the intruder does is run into the classroom and shoot the teacher, who is desperately trying to unlock the drawer. (Don’t assume the alarm bells have gone off when the person walked into the school, at least not in time).

If the teachers want to have a gun locked in a drawer fine, but that should not be the first line of defense. That should be unexpected armed defenders showing up anywhere in the school. It’s a bit like criminals being worried that a house they are planning to invade has a gun... but not knowing which ones, or hijackers on a plane wondering which passenger is the armed sky marshal.

More than one interviewee made that argument on some of the ‘news’ shows over the weekend when discussing the shooting in CT. May the bastard who did this despicable act burn forever in hell!

As am I...to your first response.

To your second, if the parents entrust the well being of their children every day in school with the teachers/administrators, why would they not trust a teacher/administrator, carrying a concealed weapon, to protect their children if need be (using deadly force)?

The issue is not one of trust (although I suspect a lot of parents would not want firearms around their children,,,they trust teachers to educate them etc, not to defend them). It is rather what works. If teachers/administrators, volunteers...whatever have the freedom of movement to do the job effectively, I have no problem.A lot of teachers by the nature of their jobs do not, and I highly doubt you would ever get teachers to agree to have all teachers in a school armed, which is what it would take under your plan.

Oakland California school district has had metal detectors at the entrances, armed teachers, armed guards, armed sheriffs and armed police in schools and on campuses since the 1980`s when gangs tried to bring guns into classrooms.
I never hard of any massacres there.

I was only talking about armed teachers and their probable lack of movement. Armed guards can walk around and pop up unexpectedly. So can armed sheriffs. So can armed police. So could well-trained, armed volunteers. So could armed administrators. Trying to bring a gun into a classroom to show off is not the same as intruding a classroom with intent to kill.

Of course there have been no massacres there. If your schools are patrolled by an army (as this sounds like) I doubt you would have any.

I don’t think you can extrapolate that to the vast majority of schools.
More efficient means are needed.

Ah, concealed carry. Who would know who has what?

It appears that you are not familiar with Oakland gangs- They bring these guns to school to attempt to kill other gang members in school or on campus, not to show it off, but to off someone..I lived and worked there 10 years doing city security.

I don’t want to live in a police state. Nor do I want my children to live in a police state. Putting armed guards and police and metal detectors in schools is the wrong approach. I want a free society.
