FBI reopening probe into Broadwell’s access to classified documents
Hot Air ^ | November 14, 2012 | Ed Morrissey

At first the FBI probed the e-mails of Paula Broadwell and CIA Director David Petraeus from a suspicion of cyberstalking and harassment. They then dropped the probe after determining that the biographer of Petraeus had a personal relationship with him, even though they discovered that Broadwell had classified documents on her computer. After the entire probe went public and forced Petraeus to resign, FBI agents suddenly conducted a seizure of materials from Broadwell’s home — which the Washington Post reports comes from a belated curiosity into her possession of those classified documents:

The FBI is making a new push to determine how a woman who had an affair with retired Gen. David H. Petraeus when he was CIA director obtained classified files, part of an expanding series of investigations in a scandal that also threatens the career of the United States’ top military commander in Afghanistan.

Senior law enforcement officials said that a late-night seizure on Monday of boxes of material from the North Carolina home of Paula Broadwell, a Petraeus biographer whose affair with him led to his resignation last week, marks a renewed focus by investigators on sensitive material found in her possession.

“The issue of national security is still on the table,” one U.S. law enforcement official said. Both Petraeus and Broadwell have denied to investigators that he was the source of any classified information, officials said.

It is? That’s odd to hear, especially since law-enforcement officials appeared to make it plain earlier in this scandal that no charges would be forthcoming. The Post is rather surprised to hear this, too:

Senior FBI officials are expected to brief the House and Senate Intelligence Committees today on their handling of the Petraeus investigation. The officials are expected to lay out how the case was developed and argue that there were no politics involved.

The case is so critical that FBI Director Robert Mueller may attend to defend the bureau, ABC News has learned. Members of Congress have been angry that they were not informed about the case before the story was reported by the media, but FBI officials maintain that their guidelines forbid them from discussing ongoing criminal cases.

Is the timing of this in keeping with Eric “The Coward” Withholder’s sudden discovery that he, in fact, has more ‘gas in his tank’ to stay on as the head of the Just Us Department? Does retaining Holder aid in the cover-up and obfuscation?

Petraeus’ mistress bragged just weeks ago of future book collaboration, source says

Fox News’ source attended a dinner Oct. 27 at the Washington Ritz-Carlton, where Broadwell was talking up the future projects.

“She said that they had two book ideas they were pursuing, and they hoped to publish again sometime in the next two years,” Fox News’ source said.

The annual event is hosted by the Office of Strategic Services Society, which, according to the event flyer, “celebrates the historic accomplishments of the OSS during World War II – the first organized effort by the United States to implement a centralized system of strategic intelligence.”

After the dinner, Fox News was told, Broadwell appeared confident and at ease while mingling with guests, hardly the portrait of a women who was deeply shaken by the end of an affair.

“She was elated, beaming that night,” the dinner attendee told Fox News. “She was having her picture taken with guests. She would disappear for a few minutes and then return, very much enjoying the attention.”

The source who attended the event was struck by how openly Broadwell spoke about Petraeus, adding that she seemed to have personal insights about the CIA director: “She said he was unsure of himself sometimes. She said he was concerned about the public’s perception of him.”

This woman could not be this stupid.

I understand that she is an Intelligence Officer(LTC)in the U.S. Army Reserve. If so, she has a Top Secret Clearance but we don’t know what access she is authorized.

As a certain famous lady is fond of saying “You betcha!!” Carney lied his @ss off again yesterday .... about the WH not knowing anything until the 6th. I’m just not buying it and eventually, the lies are all going to collapse under their own weight ... the problem with lies is you have to remember which lies you told and to whom .... when you’ve got dozens of people engaged in this, no way they can keep it all straight and not start contradicting each other (like with Benghazi - all the different timelines, etc.).

I wish the conservative media would get off the subject of this Paula Poundwell woman, and the generals, etc., and back to Benghazigate.

Not sure why this would be a problem. Didn't The White set the precedent when they gave classified info to Hollywood regarding Seal team 6?

Unfortunately, we need to wade through the crap to get back on track. Smoke screens are coming from all flanks.

The need to know, is the fundamental principal with regard to security access....removing classified material(s) from a secure area, is against the rules...storing classified materials in an unsecure location is against the rules...

“This woman could not be this stupid.”

No, she’s not.

Interesting timeline: The OSS Society party was the day after Broadwell’s 10/26 speech at DU. Her interview with the FBI was the week of 10/21, at which time she gave up her computer.

"If so, she has a Top Secret Clearance but we don’t know what access she is authorized."

Regardless, it should not be on her personal computer. I'm sure a lot of the cyber security regs have changed since I was in, but even then, there was a long and lengthy process to have a government computer accredited for classified info. I'm not sure if there even were any provisions for a personal computer to be accredited.

If she had that high a clearance she should have known better than keep that sort of documents at her HOUSE.

That stuff is REQUIRED to be under approved lock and key, at an approved facility.

She’s not authorized to take it home; unless she lives in a SCIF or something. That would be instant loss of clearance, job, less than honorable discharge... if not jail time for most.

Obama is after her big time. He wants to utterly destroy Petraeus. Why?

There is a pattern of Obama shafting all the generals along the Benghazi trail. And Congress is giving Obama plenty of time to do it? Why?

Why isn’t Petraeus subpoened by Issa’s House Oversight Committee? Feinstein wants him first a a Senate Committee witness??

Petraeus should be on the hill testifying about Benghazi.STAT.

I know all that. I was just reporting Reserve Officer status as it might shed some light on how she gained access to some information that could be unrelated to her affair with Petraeus. What she actually had in her possession and what she did with it is I guess still to be determined. As an intelligence officer, I am sure she was aware of the “Rules”, but as an ambitious journalist she may have chosen to disregard them.

Is this another way to tell Petraeus that the price of him telling the truth about Benghazi would be very high indeed?
