They want control. Absolute, total control. Of everything.
The state ruined Paypal which originally provided a way for people to transact business anonymously and without cutting in Uncle Sam (a major crime in the USSA) and will soon ruin Amazon, eBay and countless other online retailers. The Net is about to be locked down as tight as anything else under governments thumb. It was permitted to be free until it became too successful. And that is exactly whats going to happen to the cars that are supposed to free us from $4 a gallon fill-ups. As soon as they can actually do that and as soon as there are enough of them in peoples driveways the boom will be lowered.
I suspect well end up paying even more to drive that is, whenever were allowed to drive.

‘They’ want a docile, immobile, ignorant, unarmed and unsuspecting populace.
I want ‘Them’ gone.................
The Gasoline tax is one of the few that actully gets spent on what it was supposed to pay for... ROADS so the freeloaders using non tax fuel on the ROADS will be required at some point to pay too. Sadly in all likelihood the new tax will be on everyone so we that use cars that do use gasoline will be taxed twice. (diesel’s too)
Paypal is ruined? I had aprox 100 transactions in 2012 without a problem.
what is a “good” hybrid?
...anything the Government subsidizes,
like volts and ethanol,
is NOT “good”!
Oregon had a big state subsidy promotion to get people to buy crappy little electric and hybrid cars. Then they realized that people not buying gas weren’t “paying their fair share” of the highway tax. So now they have added a surcharge to registration fees to punish the tiny bug car owners and they are working on a law to put GPS in every car so they can tell how far people drive and charge them an appropriate mobility tax.

Actually it doesn’t get spent on roads in many states but is dumped into the general fund to cover some of the latest shortfalls. What dollars do make it to pay for infrastructure repair are among the least monitored and I would suspect grossly fraught with fraud and abuse.

2012 isn’t over yet!
Shhhhhhhh......they’re smarter than you.
Good for Missouri !
Texas is pretty good on this as I understand it.
We are heading into an era where our true mileage, driving habits, where we drive and driving records will determine our vehicle insurance costs.
Left wing states like Oregone have advocated that drivers of all vehicles be taxed per mile to pay for road repair and damage from traffic. I believe that at one time the enviralists in Oregone were pushing to have GPS units in every car go log every mile, top speeds, average speed and where the mileage happened.
Progressive is pushing for its customers to install a meter/sensor that will give them data on each vehicle re driving habits plus mileage.
We have had State Farm for decades an about two years ago started sending in our odometer readings every quarter. We don’t drive that much retirees.
Of course no taxes will be eliminated. California on top of our abused road taxes charge sales tax on $ we buy.
As conservatives, we believe that if you use something that is paid for by our taxes, you should pay for your fair share.
We do have a problem when the liberals in charge use for example Road tax $’s to fund their wet dreams.
Sadly, the premise of your statement is false.
“Gas tax is routinely diverted to pay for “mass transit” buses, trolleys and trains. The roads are left unmaintained with cracks and potholes.”
That is what happened most counties in Californicatoru land.
Here in Wino county our roads were starting to look third world country roads, until a non partisian group discovered how the game was being played. Amazingly, the counties/cities found money to start paving and maintaining our roads. This road renewal started about the time of the financial meltdown, and millions and millions of $’s have been funneled into getting roads back in shape.
However due to what many of us would call criminal misuse of the road money for over a decade, our roads will never be up to par. Some of us live with roads that have not had any major maintenance for 3-4 decades, and we will be the last ones getting any road repair funds.
That's what I figured.
In the end, the socialists always find a way to divert taxpayer ("Republican") dollars into the concentrated Democrat parasite nests ("cities").
You don't live in California, do you? In the once-Golden state, our legislature has been raiding the gas tax money for years - as a result our highways are among the worst in the nation.
Guess my seeing thing through the lens of Texas may have made me overly optimistic.
Though the solution of taxing everyone DOES have a high change of happening
Should have been:
“Of course no taxes will be eliminated. California on top of our abused road taxes charge a sales tax on gas $ we spend.
