GOP Rules Committee Rapidly Moving to Shut Out Grassroots at 2:00 p.m. Today (It's not over)
RedState ^ | Tuesday August 28, 2012 | Erick Erickson

Posted on 08/28/2012 7:31:55 AM PDT by Bigtigermike

At 2:00 p.m. today in Tampa, the Republican National Committee, led by Team Romney, is moving to shut down conservative grassroots activists. I’ve been on the phone with several individuals involved in the fight who tell me that the fight is not over, it is only just starting.

Specifically, the media is reporting that the rules fight is over because Team Romney is abandoning Ben Ginsberg’s effort to allow candidates to control delegates. Under an initial proposal, delegates would, in effect, be chosen by the presumed nominee’s campaign and not based on votes in the states and delegate selection processes in the states.

That issue appears resolved, but several people I’ve spoken to this morning make clear that Team Romney and the RNC establishment are using that compromise as a red herring to distract from two major rules change proposals that would decimate Republican grassroots and prevent upstart political campaigns.

Reports that the floor fight threat is over might be designed to calm the grassroots and get them to ignore what is coming at 2 o’clock.

The first rule to be proposed is one that would give the Republican National Committee the power to change rules between conventions with a three-quarters vote of the RNC. One source tells me, “With a Republican President, of course this is doable. Everybody will roll over if a President Romney asks them too. They’ll be able to get Ben Ginsberg’s proposal next year.”

In other words, if Team Romney prevails in this rules change, they don’t have to worry about Ben Ginsberg not getting his way today on the delegate changes. They’ll be able to do it later when the press and grassroots are not watching.

The second rules change would front load winner takes all primaries.

Please accept my apology for any ill-will generated by my post 449 to you.

No apology is necessary but if you wish, I'll gladly accept it. After some of the names I've been called for the positions I've taken regarding Romney, it honestly is no big deal.

As I mentioned before, I honestly do admire your optimism. We can sure use that in the movement today.

I won’t ping you to a thread again. I thought you would want to know what is happening about rules at the convention.

They were threatening a floor battle over the nomination.

Well Reagan brought one and we all know how that turned out. Is that why you fear another?

I’ll tell you this ... I admire your optimism.

Thank you. I try to be as optimistic as reasonably possible. I did the "pessimism all the time" thing 20 years ago (NOT that you are, but I was) and "coincidentally" (?) I was an atheist then!

I tend to be a fatalist when it comes to the party elite and I admit that freely. I’d much prefer to see a strong Republican Party structure run by the base. But after today, can you honestly say you see that as a possibility?

Yes, I can honestly say that, but let me ALSO say, I do not think it's a GREAT possibility.

Again, let me be clear: My "relationship" with the RNC right now is tenuous, at best. Only the thinnest of margins still gives me reasonable hope things may change in the party. To be blunt, one of the greatest reasons I'm still reticent for change is that a third party (any of them) are simply so outgunned on every level, it's such a long shot.

But one thing that has been said here on FR that I cannot deny, "At a certain point, one's principles must be valued more than any party." A backgroom deal using Rule 12 will be the dealbreaker for me. That, is my line in the sand. For me, it's not an arbitrary line either because, as I stated earlier, the way I'd see it at that point, the RNC would be completely overrun with elitism, with absolutely no hope of conservatism having any real impact.

We all have such lines, such deal breakers, that is mine. I don't fault anyone for having already reached a point of no return, I really don't, and do not seek to "convert" anyone here from not voting for the GOP. I've only wanted to offer the facts of Rule 12 on this thread, and offer my reasoning for "staying the course", but again, anyone pulling the eject lever at this point, can't be faulted either, IMO.

Well, they have their plans and we have ours. Tea party sweeps in 2012 and then we hit them harder in 2014 and 2016!!
The grassroots must wrest control away from the central planning big government statists!!
Long live Liberty!!

Well stated, intellectually quite honest and a credit to your beliefs. Salute to you.

For me the dealbreaker was Romney himself. We all know his positions and we all know how they have ‘changed’ over time to suit whatever political wind he wishes to catch in his sails. I have said it in Romney’s case since 2007 — I will not support an abortionist and simply because he claims not to be doesn’t make it so when he’s spent 30 years working for abortion rights.

Of course, no one will ever confuse Romney with a conservative on any number of counts so the decision became easier and easier over time. And now that HIS Republican Party has stomped on the prostrate body of its base in a sham of a floor vote, it’s easier than ever to see why a party run by men such as Romney and those who agree with him has little hope of returning to its roots.

We all fight in our own ways. I think in the end, though, we’ll start to coalesce around a conservative alternative. It’ll be hard to set up — no one has any doubt about that — but in the end we’ll have something we can proudly support and which we know will support what we believe in.

What Gator said.

Yes, I do fear the shut down of communications. The Tea Party grew out of the “new” types of communication. That is why I have always advocated for Freepers to form “pods” of trusted people in order to continue the fight. There would be cross communication between pods via ham radio or even letters. We have to start thinking like the “resistance” in Europe during WWII. The new links are vulnerable. Buy bicycles & motorcycles (mountain bikes). Cars will be monitored. Am I paranoid? Yes, but that doesn’t mean I’m wrong.

Nan, I absolutely do not believe you are wrong. Maybe, at one time it was unthinkable to have our communication cut off, but not after what we’ve witnessed the past four years. I don’t know if we have anything resembling a pod out here, but JR’s only 45 minutes away and I’m betting he would somehow manage to connect to the resistance. I pray we never come to that.

Indeed I can! I'm still stunned by what I witnessed. It was so obvious.

“We have to start thinking like the “resistance” in Europe during WWII.”

Also the dissenters and samizdat distribution networks in the FORMER Soviet Union. No matter whether Elagabalus or Diocletian wins.

Our only hope IS God. Maybe God wants us to a point where we know He is our only hope. We are at a Hezekiah moment when we have to decide if we are going to make an alliance with a corrupt politician (who's also in a cult to make matters worse), or trust God and wait on Him. Will we compromise and give support to someone who is everything we spent our life fighting because he has an R behind his name? Someone whose actions shows he will continue to be a corrupt politician. Everyday it seems he and the gop keeps giving me more and more reasons I can't vote for him. Today was the cherry on top.

I worked in pro-life causes so long, and we were winning. 51% vs 42% think abortion is wrong. We were on the verge of really saving babies lives. Maybe that is what the gop/romney was trying to stop; pro-lifers and not abortions. I was a counselor at a Crisis Pregnancy Center and seen first hand what abortion does to women. When you have someone coming in for the free pregnancy test and know from their records they've been positive once, twice or more and had at least one abortion, if not two or three abortion; it makes you cry. You want to yell at these women and tell them how selfish they are, but you can't. And the women who come to us broken because they did have an abortion and now want to die, they feel they deserve to die because of what they did. That woman gave me the hope to continue fighting. God forgives and use these women to stop abortion.

I was suppose to be delegate, but pulled my name when Romney won. I got an interesting call from a state republican party person a few hours ago asking me my thoughts on Romney. I let him know their was no way I was going to vote for romney, and why. He was really nice, so I told him I was voting the rest of the ticket. He tried to talk me into Romney, but I gave him even more reasons I can't.
