BOULDER, Colo. -- The University of Colorado is barring students with concealed carry permits from bringing guns into dorms on its Boulder campus.

The policy announced Thursday is in response to a March 5 Colorado Supreme Court ruling that said CU can't ban permit holders from bringing guns to campus.

The university also said graduate students who live in university housing off the main campus will be able to have guns in their apartments if they're kept in a safe.

It seems unlikely that they can require actions of students off campus in their own homes.

CU is only doing this as to housing it owns. They are saying that as a landlord we are banning guns from our property.

Same thing as the Aurora theater that purportedly banned guns from its premises.

So, if, God forbid, a shooter wants to attack the CU campus, where do you think they will go? To the area where the Supreme Court said they can't ban guns or to the gun free area???

36 square miles surrounded by reality. Good engineering program but the rest of it.. sheesh, wouldn’t waist a farthing.

I imagine that the thought of armed Americans scares the hell out of the Marxist “perfessors” that infest that joint.

I always keep my guns locked up...that’s where they’re the most useful when they’re needed most. </sarc >

They are saying that as a landlord we are banning guns from our property.

A theater may be able to do that... I'm not sure a landlord can. Can a landlord tell you that you can't have booze in your rental?

It would seem to me, that unless landlords can require renters have their guns in safes, that the university wouldn't be able to.

As far as dorms, whether a campus classroom or dorm, campus is campus. If they're legal in campus classrooms they're legal in campus dorms.

I would say there is a slight difference between the theater and CU.

The theater is private property, whereas the university is public. Now if it were a private school, then yes, they might be able to curb guns. But I think it depends on if regular landlords can prohibit guns on their property.

I don’t know the law on that, Johnny. This may just be the prelude to another lawsuit.

I know there would be heck to pay if a rental contract said 'no queers allowed'. Time to turn their rules back on them.

Let the litigation begin! The University can’t act ‘in loco parentis’ for students who have reached the age of majority. The University leadership would rather die than attempt to enforce sex-segregation or impose rules prohibiting co-habitation. Indeed, maybe even they are now operating a ‘public accommodation’.

Q: How is a dorm different than a motel? A: the hotel operator is far quicker to kick out unruly occupants.

The University can’t have it both ways, especially after Heller.

“They are saying that as a landlord we are banning guns from our property”

Don’t think they can do that without complying with the Colorado Statute. To comply, they would have to set up a perimeter around the dorms and inspect each person coming in to make sure they don’t have guns. The idea behind the provision is that if a public entity is to ban some guns by good guys, that they make sure bad guys aren’t sneaking them in.

So CO Supreme Court JUST told them they can’t ban permit holders from carrying, so scale back and say they will just ban them from actually possessing a firearm if they are in University Housing? As for Graduate Students off-campus - it would seem they are just itching for another lawsuit.

What do you expect in the People’s Socialist Republic of Boulder, where they believe they can ride roughshod over others’ rights simply because they don’t agree... (Gee, why does that sound familiar???)

If the university takes so much as a penny from the federal government this should be struck down as unconstitutional.

UC is a government institution, there are NO private property rights like the theater.
