I have always wondered how it felt to be a committed Communist in the former Soviet Union, when the system collapsed and the Berlin Wall fell.
Now I know.
Yesterday, the Supreme Court of the United States of America tore up the social contract between America and her citizens. They concluded that it was legal and Constitutional to force a citizen to buy a government-sanctioned product or service.
This flies squarely in the face of everything it is to be a free citizen, and totally upends the concept of free markets. Armed with this ruling, the government may now decree that every citizen purchase a particular car, a particular item of clothing.... or, harkening back to the 1930's German experience, a particular book (Of course, even Hitler saw that it would be unreasonable to force people to buy his book, so he gave them for free to newlyweds and soldiers at the front).
Forced commerce, that is what it may reasonably be called. In what way does this differ from Central Planning, the famously failed Soviet model?
Many pundits have noted that this will likely hurt Obama and his minions in Congress and the Senate in November. While this is possibly true, does it matter? Does it change the fact that the Supreme Court has drastically altered the social contract between America's government and her people? Party control waxes. Party control wanes. But SCOTUS rulings take decades to reverse, on the rare occasions they are reversed at all. All it takes is one bad election, and the government can now decree we must own certain products and services.
We will see all sorts of freedom-limiting compelled purchases. Obviously, each person needs burial insurance, right? And liability insurance on a personal level, this is reasonable, isn't it? After all, suppose you accidently harm someone? And OF COURSE, each person who wishes to post their opinion on the internet... they will clearly need 'slander and libel' insurance, in case they should speak ill of another. All these 'insurances' are intended as new taxes, only, and in the last case, shall be created to expressly restrict free speech.
In light of this ruling, perhaps the poem at the base of the Statue of Liberty needs to be updated:
I asked at the beginning of this editorial, what it must have felt like, as a committed Communist, to see the Soviet Union fall. Well, now I know, for I -- someone committed to freedom and the American ideal embodied in the Constitution -- watched America begin the final leg of it's fall on June 28, 2012, at 10:00AM Eastern Standard Time.
It's the Gods of the Marketplace.
No German in 1925 would have considered stuffing all the Jews into ovens. Twenty years later they had done that to six million of them.
Six million Jews, and seven million other assorted Gypsies, Communists, Catholics, trade unionists, and assorted other "undesirables".
Would to God it were just the government...but it's your brother-in-law, your Mom, your neighbor, even your children!
In answer to your questions, see my post #30.
It’s time those pushing the socialist agenda to destroy our freedoms realize that their votes will have consequences.
You can always spot these people because they always talk of their RIGHTS and never talk about their RESPONSIBILITIES or DUTY.
I thought it over, and I stuck with the wall coming down, because it spoke to the death of a dream of that committed Communist.
I, a committed Capitalist and lover of freedom, now can empathize with the feelings of this fictional Communist. All they had ever had believed in their entire life, they got to see their social contract ripped up and their lives upended because of it.
I feel the same, only in the inversion of ideals compared to the Communist.
bttt
This was my only post yesterday (and I would add that the founders were not only willing to do this, they also risked their fortunes and lives had they not been successful):
America was founded when one-third of the population decided to take a stand against tyrannical government.
One-third of the population was willing to shoot their neighbors, friends, and relatives rather than be enslaved by taxation.
Are we there yet?
I’ll add you both. Thanks for asking.
Doubtful.....
This just in, on the urging of Michelle Antoinette, President Mountain Dew has made an executive order that all Americans are required to have broccoli (without butter or cheese on it) today.
The generous and fair nature of President Mountain Dew was noted in the press, as our dear leader has given choice to the people in that they may choose to have the broccoli for either lunch OR dinner, whichever they prefer.
If any American is found to have not eaten their broccoli by 9pm central time, a tax of $25 dollars per violater will be imposed by the IRS. The tax will be taken directly from bank accounts without any notice.
This is the crux of the matter, IMO, and it's why I'm still walking around feeling half dead inside. We've been betrayed in a way that now leaves us open to all manner of tyranny.
American Populace: "YAY! It's BROCCOLI DAY AGAIN!!!!"
American Conservatives: "Hey, wait a second, this isn't right, forcing people to...."
American Liberals: "GAW DAMNED ANTI-VEGETABLE CONSERVATIVES!!! You are racist against the color GREEN!!!"
Hey, you’re the one with the license. That’s why we pay you the big bucks...to think these things through. I just have a hard time imagining being a Communist, even fictional. But that’s just me.
T4TP....
Those words need to be thought and uttered by every American today.
If ANY of this is true, how dare he. How dare he abdicate his responsibility and try to play politics.
The ramifications of this decision fundamentally changes America, and actually makes us less free than the former Soviet Union. At no point in their history did they force a purchase of anything.
I had Fox on this morning and they were tossing around the various explanations/justifications for why he did what he did. You’re 100% right, Laz...none of it matters because his responsibility was to uphold the Constitution and he DITCHED THAT.
We haven't forgotten that Roberts messed up - either deliberately or accidentally - Obama's oath of office as well, which was subsequently given in private. I still wonder at the significance of that. Did Roberts know at the time that O was unqualified?
As Roberts likely depended upon then, it now moot. He and his court are —according to the honest Justice Thomas— dodging that issue. The fascist democrats have gathered the perfect storm of affirmative action promotion, the race card, a more than 40% dependency voting class, racial strife pitting whites, Latinos, and blacks against each other to nullify the weight of any of the three, and a false front globalist servant pretending to be a conservative so he can degrade the third institution of the three branch system as it collpases. The enemy sits in our White House and runs the Senate, and now runs the subPreme court. we The People are thoroughly usurped as sovereigns, now we just have to learn to live with it because the feckelss enablers, euphemistically called ‘the republicn party’, are going to go along with what their campaign funding globalists tell them to go with.
We'll never be there, but we have alternatives. IMO, better ones.
Your way with words has not deserted you, my friend. Thank you for the ping. Shut up and kiss me, and here’s a hug {{{{Lazamataz}}}} until Sidebar gets back to give you a proper one.
