Road Trip: Maxwell-Gunter Air Force Base, Alabama

Maxwell Air Force Base, officially known as Maxwell-Gunter Air Force Base, is a United States Air Force installation under the Air Education and Training Command (AETC). The installation is located in Montgomery, Alabama, US. It was named in honor of Atmore, Alabama native Second Lieutenant William C. Maxwell.

Maxwell AFB is the headquarters of Air University (AU), a major component of Air Education and Training Command (AETC), and is the U.S. Air Force's center for Joint Professional Military Education (PME). The host wing for Maxwell-Gunter is the 42nd Air Base Wing (42 ABW). The 908th Airlift Wing (908 AW) is a tenant activity and the only operational flying wing at Maxwell.

Under Air University are three principal schools that provide various levels of Joint Professional Military Education (JPME). The first is Squadron Officer School (SOS), a nearly 2 month program oriented towards First Lieutenants and Captains in the Regular Air Force, Air Force Reserve and Air National Guard.

The second, Air Command and Staff College (ACSC) is a year long program for Air Force officers (to include Air Force Reserve and Air National Guard), Department of Defense civil servants in the grade of GS-13, as well as select officers from other U.S. and Allied armed forces in the rank of Major, Lieutenant Commander, Squadron Leader or equivalent. ACSC is considered "intermediate" level JPME.

The third program, Air War College (AWC) is also a year long program and selects students from the same sources as ACSC, but the minimum rank for attendance rises to Lieutenant Colonel, Commander, Wing Commander or equivalent or DoD civil servants in the grade of GS-14. AWC is considered "senior" level JPME.

Maxwell AFB also hosts the Air Force Officer Accession and Training Schools (AFOATS), which has oversight for two of the Air Force's three officer commissioning programs, Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFROTC), which is headquartered at Maxwell and Air Force Officer Training School (OTS), which is headquartered and conducted at Maxwell AFB, having relocated from Lackland AFB, Texas in the 1990s.

Capitalizing on the new facilities built for OTS in the 1990s, Maxwell is now the only base hosting the annual fall/spring semester and summer Field Training (FT) encampments for AFROTC cadets that they must attend before commissioning. The Civil Air Patrol's corporate and joint CAP-USAF headquarters is also located at Maxwell.

It’s a gutter garden.

If you stapled plastic over the base and just cut where the little pots go, and covered the tops with plastic and just cut in to place your plants, this would really conserve a bunch of water.

I’m going to try at least one on my deck.

Ah, you were at Gunter when we lived on Hatcher St. just beyond the fence. Do you remember the Dark Hollow Bluegrass Inn and the Lower Forty Grass? That was us.

It is always interesting to see who comes through Maxwell attending Air University. Hang around Montgomery long enough and you will see people in flight suits from countries that you didn’t know had Air Forces.

And thanks very much to you and Lauren for tonight's Road Trip to Maxwell-Gunter AFB, Alabama!

I spent three hours this morning in the Pulmonary Hypertension Clinic at Johns Hopkins Hospital. At the end of process, the eminent physician examining me opined that I did not have pulmonary hypertension. He is of the opinion that my shortness of breath is primarily a result of my obesity.

He did order a substantial amount of blood work, which I had drawn there, and a ventilation perfusion scan - a nuclear medicine study, that I need to schedule. He also ordered a follow up sleep study for CPAP titration.

I finally hit the office this afternoon at 1:00 pm and was informed that, after curtailing our hours last Friday, the Powers That Be decided over the weekend to increase our hours to 60/wk, to be worked anytime between 6:00 a.m. and Midnight. I worked until 9:00 p.m. tonight - cancelled my PT on the basis I was not up to it physically.

Over the weekend, I was in a very weak state and did not even go to Mass yesterday. I feel somewhat better today, but still not up to snuff.

Not a lot of answers today, but at least I appear not to be in danger of immediate death. BP, lipids and cardiac all look good. We soldier on!

That was very cool! I will show hubby when he gets home. He has planted several pots with various things...have no idea what...but they just aren’t thriving yet.

I do have some lilies about to bloom, and my shasta daisies are doing good after we had a bit of rain last month. I lost a rose bush, though, and it made me sad. Not planting any more of them till I’m sure this is over.

The hand watering sucks! :)

I so need the rain to quit for about a week so I can expand my garden. You can’t till with the soil too wet.. You will compact it and beat all the air out of it.

Check out the link to the gutter garden.. You can do containers just about anywhere, even on a deck.

Because of the dogs I haven’t been able to garden in the yard for years. I have a container garden in my driveway.

I’m thinking about converting to the gutter system.. Never watering by hand again sounds pretty enticing.

My corn is about 8 inches tall. I have about 150 square foot of it. I have 2 types of beans planted.. bush beans for the green beans. They don’t vine. I have Vermont cranberry beans are like a lighter smaller kidney bean are going too.

I have out 25 Tomato plants at Runamuck, a few more at home. Trying celery for the first time, it was just a lark to see if I could do it.

Several varieties of lettuce, kale, cabbage, broccoli and onions in my raised beds.

Bunch of herbs, basil, sage, parsley, rosemary, thyme, spearmint, fennel, and camomile.

10 Strawberry plants, they are ever bearers but nothing on them yet..

Planted some barley, I mostly wanted the straw from it but I won’t turn down the seeds if it makes any.

This is true. At the end of things at Hopkins, I had a six minute walk back and forth in a long hall. Apparently I did okay, my pulse was only mildly elevated at the end. I'll have to increase that - can't really do it outside - I'd be falling all over the place with the walker. It catches on every seam in the sidewalk, etc.

The bane of containers is dry and drench cycles. The gutter looks like it would ensure even watering.

I watched a bunch of the video’s in that series, he has guys from TX and AZ sending him proof that it works in hot , dry climates.

Uncovered a 10 foot stretch uses about 5 gallons a day, I bet if you cover the open spaces to minimize evaporation you could cut that to 2.5 gallons.

If you aren’t growing food, you could use grey water.

Good news, really...good to know that pulmonary hypertension is not the culprit. Chubbiness can be overcome.

Lots of blood work...the vampires at work.

Cancelling PT was probably a good idea, both mentally and physically. And it allowed a good start on your hours.....you are going to be a busy boy this week, or until they change their minds again.
