New York Plans to Ban Sale of Big Sizes of Sugary Drinks
The New York Times ^ | May 30, 2012 | MICHAEL M. GRYNBAUM

New York City plans to enact a far-reaching ban on the sale of large sodas and other sugary drinks at restaurants, movie theaters and street carts, in the most ambitious effort yet by the Bloomberg administration to combat rising obesity.

The proposed ban would affect virtually the entire menu of popular sugary drinks found in delis, fast-food franchises and even sports arenas, from energy drinks to pre-sweetened iced teas. The sale of any cup or bottle of sweetened drink larger than 16 fluid ounces — about the size of a medium coffee, and smaller than a common soda bottle — would be prohibited under the first-in-the-nation plan, which could take effect as soon as next March.

The measure would not apply to diet sodas, fruit juices, dairy-based drinks like milkshakes, or alcoholic beverages; it would not extend to beverages sold in grocery or convenience stores.

“Actually, 1970 is the precise year the law was passed banning cigarette advertising from TV and Radio.”

The 70’s also brought us the seat belt laws that “would never be a primary enforcement reason for a traffic stop.” Now we have TV commercials that brag about their focus on raising revenues with seat belt enforcement efforts.

It was also the decade that gave us an expanded EPA and the WOsD.

The poster who referenced the 70’s doesn’t realize that decade built on the foundation built by FDR for the nanny state.

The 'worst drink in America': 2,000-calorie milkshake has as much saturated fat as 25 rashers of bacon

780 calories and this is just regular size. Now they can sell Big Gulp Long Island Ice Teas at the drive-thru with about ten shots of liquor and over 2000 calories! ;-)

A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly.

OK, but what about AFTER lunch?

Seriously. Have you ever met a Lib who can change a tire, or his own oil, or work a simple quadratic, or build a fire?

Check.
Check.
Check.
Check.
Whew! Guess I'm not a lib. That's a relief!

A new study finds a potential link between daily consumption of diet soft drinks and the risk of vascular events.

Isn't it great that we pay money to fedzilla so they can threaten us over the airwaves?

“There’s no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren’t enough criminals, one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws. Who wants a nation of law-abiding citizens? What’s there in that for anyone? But just pass the kind of laws that can neither be observed nor enforced nor objectively interpreted and you create a nation of law-breakers — and then you cash in on guilt. Now that’s the system.”

If this isn't thrown out in court, it will set a precedent for the banning of anything that doesn't fit the comfort zone of a wack job politician.

If obesity is the problem it follows that Doomberg could ban sitting in front of the tube with a bowl of chips, ordering pizza delivery and maybe even pastry shops.

What will happen when a Mayor of different political thought decides to ban hoodies and pants hanging on the ground?

If we fight this, yes, it can be defeated. But if we think that getting around a law here and there means it will back them off, they’ll win in the long run.

New Jersey cops sit in liquor stores near the NJ/PA border so they can tip off Pennsylvania cops if they see people with PA license plates buying booze, and the PA cops will hunt you down like a bank robber — waiting until you get back from work if necessary. That procedure wasn’t implemented with the repeal of Prohibition.

About two years ago when Arizona's SB1070 was the topic at hand, one of the 'bama's big complaints was that people wouldn't be able to take their kids for ice cream without being "harassed." That was a bad thing.

Now, you can't take your kid for a soda without being harassed, but that's a good thing.

Government has no business regulating this.

But, I don’t feel at all sorry for the fast food joints that have small (32oz), medium (128oz) and large (5gal) sizes of drinks. You ask for a small and they slam you with more soda than you want. That’s bad, and they’ve brought this regulation on themselves.

In other news, NYC mayor M. Bloomberg is advocating extension of social security benefits to invertebrates and is seriously considering a ban on frowning in the burroughs. Whether that ban should be extended to areas west of the Tappenzee Bridge is being taken up by his Governors Against Bad Attitudes (GABA) compadres. GABA members have recently complained that the lack of jobs and fear of a worldwide depression and probable famine has begun to sour some voters. /sarc
