New York City plans to enact a far-reaching ban on the sale of large sodas and other sugary drinks at restaurants, movie theaters and street carts, in the most ambitious effort yet by the Bloomberg administration to combat rising obesity.
The proposed ban would affect virtually the entire menu of popular sugary drinks found in delis, fast-food franchises and even sports arenas, from energy drinks to pre-sweetened iced teas. The sale of any cup or bottle of sweetened drink larger than 16 fluid ounces — about the size of a medium coffee, and smaller than a common soda bottle — would be prohibited under the first-in-the-nation plan, which could take effect as soon as next March.
The measure would not apply to diet sodas, fruit juices, dairy-based drinks like milkshakes, or alcoholic beverages; it would not extend to beverages sold in grocery or convenience stores.

I’d just buy two or three sodas or smuggle in my favorite beverage in the bladder of my Camel Back.

the problem is not the cup. It’s the hand it’s placed in. I can drink just as much soda at McDonalds with a small or medium cup.
They have free refills after all.
I can see them doing 2 for 1 drinks or selling bottomless cups at the theater. The only effect this ban would have is on drive thru orders.
Just give them time. Soon they will be banning the multiple sales of smaller drinks.

Is obesity really that much of a problem in NYC? You walk everywhere, I don’t remember seeing a lot of chubbs (other than maybe a few tourists passing through?).
But, on the good news front, the price will be decreased proportionately.

So you won’t be able to purchase a 64 ounce Big Gulp but you’ll be able to buy a Margerita that could float a battleship and they’re doing this for health reasons.

“It’s for your own good” sounds so good, and is the death knell of freedoms and liberties. I want, I demand the freedom to make bad choices. I don’t want some nanny-state do-gooder deciding what he or she thinks is good for me.
Not for long. By the time Bloomberg is done, the line in front of the counter at a fast food chain will double as a scale/scanner. You don't need to order, your biometrics will be used to order what is good for you. Just pay and take what they give you.
