I’d just buy two or three sodas or smuggle in my favorite beverage in the bladder of my Camel Back.

Ya.. like that will fix the problem :/
the problem is not the cup. It’s the hand it’s placed in. I can drink just as much soda at McDonalds with a small or medium cup.
They have free refills after all.
I can see them doing 2 for 1 drinks or selling bottomless cups at the theater. The only effect this ban would have is on drive thru orders.
To: John W
Just give them time. Soon they will be banning the multiple sales of smaller drinks.

Is obesity really that much of a problem in NYC? You walk everywhere, I don’t remember seeing a lot of chubbs (other than maybe a few tourists passing through?).
To: John W
He also said he foresaw no adverse effect on local businesses, and he suggested that restaurants could simply charge more for smaller drinks if their sales were to drop.
Typical lib.

So you won’t be able to purchase a 64 ounce Big Gulp but you’ll be able to buy a Margerita that could float a battleship and they’re doing this for health reasons.
Is that about right?

“It’s for your own good” sounds so good, and is the death knell of freedoms and liberties. I want, I demand the freedom to make bad choices. I don’t want some nanny-state do-gooder deciding what he or she thinks is good for me.

If it wasn’t for term limits (before Bloomberg ended them), Rudy Giuliani would, probably, still be NYC mayor, today.

NYC already has a thriving black market. All this does is add new products to it.
Psst, gov’ment types: you don’t get sales taxes from black market transactions, and you don’t get to count the jobs created in the black market, either.

What will happen when the poor cannot afford to buy multiple drinks to equal their previous big gulp? Who will champion the beverage disadvantaged?
