CENTER, TX (KSLA) -
An East Texas student was told he could not attend prom because of an incident involving a drama department prop.
Center High School juniors and seniors will go to prom Saturday night, but Center High School Student Avery Tindol will not be among them because of an incident involving a toy gun.
Tindol says he and other students were cleaning out the drama room's prop closet when he was handed a toy gun before the bell rang dismissing class. "I realized I had it in my pocket and as soon as a did I took it out to give it to the guy that gave it to me, and a teacher ran up and grabbed my arm," says Tindol.
The Center, Texas school board told Tindol that he would not be allowed to go to prom because of this and another incident that happened in October. Tindol was suspended for three days while administration investigated. Tindol's name was cleared following the investigation.
But a rule in the high school's handbook says after suspensions, administrators can decide what school activities a student can participate in. "I was shocked, I figured they would be on my side," says Tindol.
Center school administrators say they cannot comment on the disciplinary actions against Tindol.
California or New Jersey, I could see this, but not in deep East Texas.
When I grew up gun racks in the pickup were for guns. We carried them all the time. We even traded guns in school. Never thought a thing of it. Even bought and sold from teachers as late as 1985.
We hunted after school before we even went home.
The world has changed beyond my ability to absorb it these last 15 years.

Look, it doesn’t matter any longer WHAT part of this country you live in: it’s about the educrats, NOT the culture of a particular region.
They’re libtards, they’re stupid, they are typically the ones who were fighting for bottom-of-the-class positions in college with the journalism majors, and they have as much common sense as yer average avocado.
Time to gut the NEA and take education back in this country. The inmates are running the asylum(s).
Every single moron involved in this should be fired, any accrued pension revoked, and every one should be permanently barred from govt employment.
Believe me, we got our share in Texas, too.
I remember as late as 91-92 when I was in HS that folks had gun racks in trucks in the parking lot and we had a hunting safety in school where some could bring their rifle to class.
Yeah, this is totally insane.
There was no “crime” to punish, much less one that makes any sense. A school infraction should be punished-where its needed- in the school.
School Administration = last refuge for despots.
“Zero tolerance” = zero common sense = no discretion = the envy of the Soviet Gulag.
Public school is child abuse.
If I were czar, anyone with a degree from a College of Education would be banned from any teaching contact with students.
We had a one hour lockdown at my high school and it turned out to be a drama class prop. Last week the middle school across the street had a lockdown because a student saw a strange man with a gun. It turned out to be the armour car company’s employee picking up the cafeteria’s money.
It is in REALLY DEEP east Texas.
Thangs be a little different there.
If they make enough noise the school will knock it off, maybe...
.
The high school near here had an hour-long lock out because two students in the parking lot had airsoft guns
What happened these last many years? Not just about guns, Columbine made that happen.
But what happened to cause all the raging political correctness and all the people who are offended who need to be protected? It is not right to abuse anyone but does everyone have to be snubbed by political correctness?
The adult that t brought the gun into the prop dept ought to be fired using the same idiotic logic.
From the time my Dad was about 12 (late ‘30s) until he joined the Navy he routinely hunted near the Pennypack Creek on the grounds where Jeane’s Hospital now stands in Philadelphia. He’d walk there from his Fox Chase home with his Sears double barrel shotgun in his hands. Nobody thought a thing of it. Passing drivers smiled and waved.
Try doing that today.
