He may not execute “Operation Rollback Spending” like Paul Ryan or Sarah Palin would, but at least he will end Obama’s assault on our nation.

That may be true. But you're talking about a general election between the Republican and Barack Obama. Santorum's endorsement of Mitt Romney came during the primary. If he did not think that Romney was a "conservative" by his own standards there was no need to endorse him or McCain when he did.
Nobody in their right mind actually believes Santorum's sudden acknowledgment that Mitt Romney is a moderate Republican after he once claimed Romney was a "real conservative". It just looks fake when he talks about Romney like that now. It's true Romney is a liberal republican. It's not true that Santorum really believes it. Santorum wants to be President.

You need to put things in context.
In a race between Mitt Romney and John McCain for the 2008 GOP Nomination, who would you call the “true conservative” of that race after it became clear it was a two man race?

I have said before and will again, Senator Santorum is a good man. Speaker Gingrich is not (to be blunt) but he has the answers. No waffling, or turning things back on his opponents - the guy actually has a plan that will work.
I have almost given up on the Speaker getting the nomination. Not quite, I still hope he does and will work for him all in until he drops out, but the chances are slim now.
What I want now is a candidate - or team - that will actually use his policy suggestions.
Sorry for being down, but this news is not exactly good from where I am sitting. We know plastic, center left, flipflopping politicians here. Had them for decades.
To be fair, assuming Romney wins the nomination, Newt will endorse Mitt too. With the exception of Paul and very few others, they will all back him. Newt, Santorum, Perry, Palin, etc, etc, will all endorse, support and actively campaign for Romney. Don't fool yourself into thinking otherwise.
To those Newt supporters they see a a compromiser rather than a fighter of principles when they see Santorum you know "well, we didn't get what we really wanted but at least we got SOMETHING done"
I just see Santorum as a terrible nominee because I think he'd lose a general election in a landslide so large it would take our House majority down with it. Romney sucks, but Rick would lose even worse. Is Rick a better conservative than Mitt? I certainly think so. Unfortunately, he would not be a better general election candidate. Santorum simply can't avoid being baited over and over and over on the social issues. By the time the media is done with him (and because Santorum is terribly undisciplined), you'd think the election was about whether to ban rubbers and Victoria's Secret catalogue's.
If I were a politician who stands on principles I would not have endorsed either. It was a primary and no endorsement required. And if I did make the stupid decision to endorse Mitt Romney I would have not gone as far as claim he is a "real conservative".

A conservative can still win if there is only one in the race from the beginning. Most moronic voters think this is a horse race and it’s your job to vote for the one who will win even if you don’t like him.

The first was that he thinks Romney is a real conservative.
Yes, perhaps Newt, Palin and all the others will end up endorsing Romney in the end but the end is when it's ONE Republican vs Barack Obama and not one republican against another republican.
If Santorum stepped down tonight I still suspect that he would endorse Mitt Romney over Newt Gingrich again calling Mitt the "real conservative". He did it before and he'd do it again. When asked about it Santorum would brush it off as "oh... that's just politics".
That's why many do not trust Santorum's judgment.

You are serving in the US Senate, with John McCain. You’ve gotten to witness first hand McCain’s actions, leadership, etc (McCain/Feingold, Gang of 14, McCain/Kennedy, Opposing the Bush Tax Cuts). You’ve really, really, grown to dislike McCain over your tenure in the Senate and agree with Thad Cochrane when he says “the thought of him being President sends shivers up my spine”.
Now witnessing that first hand, are you going to sit by and let McCain grab the nomination or are you going to do something about it.
That’s what and why Santorum did and said what he did in 2008.
