The United States Commerce Department said Tuesday it would impose tariffs on solar panels imported from China after concluding that the Chinese government provided illegal export subsidies to manufacturers there.
The tariffs were smaller than some American industry executives had hoped for 2.9 percent to 4.73 percent which could blunt their effect on the market.
But whatever the size of the penalties, Tuesdays ruling is likely to further heighten trade tensions with China, while holding implications for renewable energy policy in this country.

Well, that’ll get ‘em on more people’s roofs!
If they could have gotten them cheaper from a Chinese manufacturer, and can’t now,
are we to understand, as 0bama does, that this will result in MORE people buying solar panels?
Oh! Thinking like 0bama - we’ll just increase the subsidy for buying them!
Does that mean Obama is getting to ready to send another $500 million to Solyndra to try and revive it by softening up the competition?
As for getting China pissed off, talk to Donald Trump who has done $billions of business with China. He is correct in that we hold all the cards. China needs us as a place to sell their wares, much more than we need China.
gotta keep any more of ‘em who got Porkulus money from going under before November, dontcha know...
Free global market is great, unless it takes money out of the pockets of the bipartisan, government-linked/socialist political class.
No vote, no personal spending!
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
So Chinese subsidies to their companies are illegal, but defaulted loans to Solyndra and others are not?
The difference is then, I guess, that since our companies go out of business and the Chinese actually make a product that our subsidies are meaningless and therefore not illegal.
That’s the ticket. That will make alternative energy cheaper and more attractive.
“Green” energy has got nothing to do with cheaper, more abundant energy. It’s all about syphoning taxpayer money to favored cronies who then kick back to the O. Chicago pay to play all the way. But it won’t work right if the Chinese are undercutting the US cronies.
When we were a republic, Congress decided tariffs.
Now they’ll retaliate by putting a tariff on....what do we send them? I mean, aside from our jobs.
The jokes just write themselves.
Now we’ll need more funding to subsidize the tariff’s... *thud*
No pipeline.
Solar panel companies in the US go bankrupt even with Stimulus Part 1.
tariffs on solar panel imports.
Surely am glad I invested heavily in unicorn fart futures and skittles.
