By virtue of the generosity of one of my friends, also an FMF Corpsman, I have the entire canon of Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem on CD. I had bought a lot of it on vinyl years ago. One that has stuck with me more than most of the others is "Bold Fenian Men" (Down By the Glenside).

I went on my way, God be praised that I met her!
Be life short or long, sure I'll never forget her!
We may have good men, but we never had better!
Glory-o, Glori-o to the Bold Fenian Men!

You know you’ve made it when Elvis Presley records your songs. In 1961, Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman hit it big by giving Elvis three of his greatest successes.

In 1961, Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman handed Elvis a song that was one of their most original outings.

There was a tradition of taking Italian songs and giving them English lyrics, even if those lyrics had nothing whatever to do with the original Italian words. Vic Damone’s “You’re Breakin’ My Heart” and Dusty Springfield’s “You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me” fall into this category. Even Elvis had done this with “It’s Now or Never”. In 1961, Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman took the old Italian ballad “Come Back to Sorrento” and managed to match “Sorrento” with “surrender”.

Elvis Presley: “Surrender”
