WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A 6-year-old U.S. girl will become the youngest contestant ever in the Scripps National Spelling Bee after winning a regional competition in Virginia.
Lori Anne Madison, of Woodbridge, Virginia, won the Prince William County spelling contest earlier this month, beating out 21 top elementary and middle school competitors. Her winning word: "vaquero," a word of Spanish origin meaning cowboy.
"My parents quiz me. I read lists and I have a really good memory," Madison, who is home-schooled, told Fox's WTTG-TV, a Washington-area station.
Madison was believed to be the youngest competitor ever, the Cincinnati-based National Spelling Bee said on Tuesday. Based on incomplete records, the previous youngest contestant was 8, it said.

I actually hope she slows down a little bit. She's a little too intense for a child who hasn't had her second birthday.
The idiot reporter on FOX this morning asked her if she “gets out” to play with other children.
Impressive. Most kids at age 6 have just learned their abc’s.
She can’t tie her shoes or add 3+4, but she sure can spell! (I kid, of course, but it has been shown that a lot of these spelling bee whiz kids focus and inordinate amount of time on spelling.)
By the way, I was a 4th grade state spelling bee champion. And didn’t study a lick.
Yeah, but I bet she can't solve differential equations like my 18 month-old can. ;)
I have one that is “the high note on the violin” as well...
Oh oh. Wouldn’t this be grounds for the state to remove her from her home under hussein? I’m sure there are a load of pre-k kids families who are greatly offended that this little girl has not been dumbed down.
That’s really awesome. I think some people really are just good spellers, naturally (not negating anything that helped, she clearly has parents who do everything right). I bet she is very verbal and reads etc. I was also an early reader and just generally “knew” how to spell words correctly. Never could understand people who didn’t get it, altho, interestingly I seem to have lost some of it with age (or maybe it’s the internet—I’ll blame that).
Lol! Are you serious? She should have said no but I can spell children. :)
Some government idiot will say she had an unfair advantage by being home schooled.
Why do people always assume bright kids don’t have social skills? Most of the very smart kids I’ve known have been well rounded (with a few exceptions).
That’s wonderful! I wish I had known about things like that. I don’t remember even hearing about any sort of organized spelling bees growing up. I’m sure they must have had them, but we moved a lot. But wow, that’s really a cool thing. BTW I saw the Frasier last night where his son Frederick was in the spelling B. Very funny stuff. :)

In other news today, President Lori Anne Madison, of Woodbridge, Virginia, announced further and ongoing cuts in the size of the federal government, reducing it to 1/9 the size of that at its peak under the illegal Administration of the late President Hussein Obama of Kenya.
Yeah, but I bet she can't solve differential equations like my 18 month-old can. ;)
Well, my son just turned four and went today for his first visit to a dentist. No cavities!
I never watch that show but I was up late waiting for my husband to get home from a trip and listened in while I was folding laundry. It was SO funny at the end when they wouldn’t give into the bully’s taunts until the dad said that Frasier’s son would probably end up at a state school. Then Frasier’s brother? maybe said “How dare you?”
I laughed so hard I thought I would wake the kids. Lol!
Well what do you know, good parents are good parents. One of my nephews was like that, but then he was disadvantaged and went to public school.
A leader of a teacher’s union said “This can’t be true. Homeschoolers are dumb. D-U-M dumb!”
