President Barack Obama's approval rating has plunged below 50 percent, and Republican front-runner Mitt Romney would beat him if the election took place today, a poll showed Monday.
The survey, by ABC News and The Washington Post, indicated that only 46 percent of Americans now approve of the way Obama is handling his job, and 50 percent disapprove as he took a hit from rising gas prices.
The situation was a reversal from early February, when 50 percent approved of the president's performance and 46 percent disapproved.
The survey was released as the battleground for the Republican presidential nomination moved to the deep South for primaries in Alabama and Mississippi on Tuesday.
If the presidential election took place today, the poll found that Romney would beat Obama 49 percent to 47 percent.
The president was barely ahead of former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, who is running second in the Republican pack 49 percent to 46 percent.
Previously, Obama held significant advantages over both.
According to the survey, the drop was attributed to soaring gas prices threatening to crimp America's slow recovery from a recession.

However, I have this suspicion that Fox News and ABC News are up to something. They are trading on air personalities and O’Reilly goes on the View all the tiee. I think ABC and Fox may consolidate someday. Seriesly.
Well, if 48 percent does not pay Federal Income Tax, looks like this poll might be right on target!!
A ploy to get energized for Romney, thier candidate, sorry!
True, but you can always tell when Bill Clinton starts into a lie, because his eyebrows will shoot up about a half inch. With Obama, I think virtually everything he has said since becoming a candidate has been obfuscation.
They both will destroy our liberty and appoint liberal judges so whats the point. Obama sees us as subjects to be ruled by policy and Romney sees us as employees to be managed by policy.......
See tagline.
RE: President Barack Obama’s approval rating has plunged below 50 percent,
It amazes me to see his approval ratings still near the 50% mark. What will it take for it to take a humongous double digit dip below that?
The president was barely ahead of former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, who is running second in the Republican pack -- 49 percent to 46 percent.Romney-Santorum 2012? Santorum-Gingrich 2012? Gingrich-Perry 2012? ...
Romney will end up losing by beating himself.
Yeah, keep shoveling that horse crap AP - Romney is the one who can beat Obama... yeahm yeah,... we got it
Romney’s got what people crave... hes got electrolytes, uh... electability
46% approve of that JOKE?!
Who are these 46%?
Even reporting "bad news" for their guy, they are always pimping for this jerk. Try the other way around, schmucks...
The poll drop IS CAUSED BY zer0, by doing NOTHING to drill or relieve oil/gas prices, and by doing EVERYTHING to raise oil/gas prices, CRIMPING the US economy, and forcing recession to linger. This could be mere media setup, for when the Strategic Oil Preserve floods the market... as early as late October.
Looks like the Fluke ploy backfired.
That’s what they (the media) want us to think. Mitt won’t beat Obama, and neither will Rick. It’s either Newt or Obama.
Newt is brilliant. I wish I could say the same about GOP voters.
They have to keep him around 50%. Anything lower than that is statistically counted as a November loss!
Just like they still claim that unemployment is in the 8-9% range.
They think this is enough for us to vote for liberal romney?!?
So given (1) the supposed "enthusiasm gap" working in favor of the Republicans and (2) the tendency of the MSM pollsters to oversample Democrats, it would appear that Obama's real performance would be a few points worse vs. either Romney or Santorum than the polling indicates.
He's probably the only candidate the skinny kenyan communist muslim faggot usurper could actually beat.
