C. S. Lewis, my favorite all time author, wrote of many things. He saw humanity for what it is, especially in light of humanity's creator and moral author. One of his observations regards the tyranny a government can be on its people, when they engage in the business of humanitarianism. Here he speaks of the tyranny of the nanny state...
"Of all tyrannies a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber barons cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience."
Or to put it in my own vernacular, "but those in government who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so because they believe their morality supersedes all others and even God must take a back seat, if he wishes to stay involved; and no one else but liberals and President Obama can right all wrongs, and certainly no one is as smart about doing it as they..." not as succinct as Lewis, but for shallower minds, more words are needed.
In his book The Great Divorce Lewis describes the state of the damned through story telling; in essence, that the damned should extend their misery so no one could be happy until they are
What some people say on earth is that the final loss of one soul gives the lie to all the joy of those who are saved . . . .
That sounds very merciful: but see what lurks behind it . . .
The demand of the loveless and the self-imprisoned that they should be allowed to blackmail the universe: that till they consent to be happy (on their own terms) no one else shall taste joy: that theirs should be the final power; that Hell should be able to veto Heaven.
that till they consent to be happy (on their own terms)Liberalism and her dark horses will make everyone elses lives miserable, until all can be equalized; no one should prosper, till everyone can prosper; no one should enjoy good health till everyone can; no one can taste justice till everyone tastes injustice, and certainly no one can be legitimized until they accept the premises of Liberalism and her sacred cows, chief among them a Womens right to choose."
But now this right is being expanded, it demands that all of society be made to pay for her choice of birth control, including abortion, regardless of the conscience of the one on whom this demand is laid. And Government is exerting its power to ensure this is done... our Government has become the tyrant over us all. With this push for power, Government gobbles up society and excretes out its fiefdom of souls to be bought and sold.
Obama once stated that the constitution does not prescribe what Government CAN do for us, only what it cant do. The folly of his thinking is that whatever he can imagine the government doing for one, in terms of social justice, inevitably must done against another. As regards social justice, who becomes the arbiter of what is just? Who decides what to take away from one to give to another? Who decides what must be compensated for the injustices of human life in this world? The question is begged, when is this kind of social justice satisfied, when does the arbiter decide that justice has been justly meted out?
Tyranny is upon us all with no end in sight unless someone of the GOP candidates is brave enough to coin the argument in just these terms. To say that Obama is a good man but just doesnt get it, or to just say that hes in over his head misses the point all together. He has made himself the arbiter of us all that till he consents to be happy (on his own terms) no one else shall taste joy Obama and the left are Tyrants, no other way to interpret what they are doing. And the sooner it is acknowledged the sooner we begin to heal.
No revolution ever starts with pleasantries its always the stark realization that damnation is upon us all if something drastic is not commenced. Hence we would not have our Constitution and this America. Might I suggest we recognize the revolution we're already in... it began with Obama setting out to "fundamentally change America". Well, we either start our counter-revolution to; take back the meaning of the words of the constitution; to take back a limited government that respects God given rights; to fight against being lorded over by Tyrants; to put a stake in the heart of Liberalism and her Tyrannical judges who thwart the will of the people. We either enter this counter-revolution and fight like hell or we shall all be eaten up by Government and excreted into its fiefdom of souls to be bought and sold.
Fight you son's-a-bitches, F-I-G-H-T!!
I've even seen some tobacco smokers use that quote!!
Excellent message.
Its a CS Lewis quote and a good one at that.
That really sounds like he has never read it. Most of the provisions are directed at what it can do, should do, and how. What the Federal Government cannot do, is anything functional that it was not intended (empowered) to do. (See Constitutional Overview.)
The Founders understood that they were creating a new Government. That Government was not some mystical thing that just emerged from the spirit world, but a specific agency, created for specific, defined purposes. If Obama wants something else, let him go to some country where Government is some sort of mystical entity, able to redefine itself. But that is not something we want in America.

They don’t have to go to some other country, not when they consider the constitution a “living document”... by that, of course, they mean that the constitution means whatever they want it to mean whenever they want... but the bigger problem is that many a Republicans are quite happy with that being the standard too... just means that when they’re in power, they can ply their own interpretation to get whatever largess they want.
Excellent post. Especially the last 3 paragraphs.
The Founders had a clear vision both of what works in a free economy, and what functions of Government are properly Federal & what State & local. They also relied on older concepts, handed down from Magna Carta, and had--from their own family histories--a clear understanding of the fact that every level of social concern benefits from maximizing individual responsibility.
To put the historic picture in better focus, America: Grounded On Experience & Reason. The best way to set the scum to scurrying back to their rat holes, is for Conservatives to challenge their cloudborne theories as to how we should live, with the proven history of the human struggle.

A philosophically sound article.
