~ The FReeper Canteen Presents ~
~ Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941 ~
On Sunday, December 7th, 1941 the Japanese launched a surprise attack against the U.S. Forces stationed at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. By planning his attack on a Sunday, the Japanese commander Admiral Nagumo, hoped to catch the entire fleet in port. As luck would have it, the Aircraft Carriers and one of the Battleships were not in port. (The USS Enterprise was returning from Wake Island, where it had just delivered some aircraft. The USS Lexington was ferrying aircraft to Midway, and the USS Saratoga and USS Colorado were undergoing repairs in the United States.) In spite of the latest intelligence reports about the missing aircraft carriers (his most important targets), Admiral Nagumo decided to continue the attack with his force of six carriers and 423 aircraft. At a range of 230 miles north of Oahu, he launched the first wave of a two-wave attack. Beginning at 0600 hours his first wave consisted of 183 fighters and torpedo bombers which struck at the fleet in Pearl Harbor and the airfields in Hickam, Kaneohe and Ewa. The second strike, launched at 0715 hours, consisted of 167 aircraft, which again struck at the same targets. At 0753 hours the first wave consisting of 40 Nakajima B5N2 "Kate" torpedo bombers, 51 Aichi D3A1 "Val" dive bombers, 50 high altitude bombers and 43 Zeros struck airfields and Pearl Harbor. Within the next hour, the second wave arrived and continued the attack. Information from here...LOTS of pictures

Good morning, Pro ((HUGS))
I’m sure you are off to enjoy your day but this was the soonest I could get back. Dang work got in the way.
No snow in my area. In the mountains to the west maybe.
We’ve been have quite a bit of fog this year too.
I read before that there were some kids as young as 16 (probably younger if they lied on the papers).
Well, I’m listening to Christmas music trying to get in the mood...for wrapping presents. Dropping the cards in the mailbox on the way home. Got that shopping done? ;~}
Hope you have a warmlicious Wednesday.

My dad was on the deck of the USS Arizona on that fateful day...He was setting up chairs for a church service when he saw the planes...he later was in politics and was a council member (mayor pro tem of Dallas)......
He finally wrote his story with a history professor at North Texas University and I'll never forget the passage when
he was asked during the pandemonium a day later Who was in charge ? He said no one and the professor pushed and my dad
said “Well you did whatever you were big enough to do “.
What a generation.

Never forget. I have been to the U.S.S. Arizona as child, even then I got goose bumps at the memorial.

Good morning, beachy...((HUGS))...boy did we get storms big time. The temps started up on Friday, peaking at my house on Saturday night at 47 degrees! We had really high winds, some getting up to 118 mph gusts, with others getting sustained winds of 40, 50, 60, 70mph. Between the high winds and LOTS of rain starting Saturday evening and continuing thru Sunday afternoon, lots and lots of snow is gone...melted and blown away.
Thankfully the rain stopped, but the wind continued thru Monday and still some BIG gusts thru Tuesday. The good thing about this is that all the main roads got dried out because of the wind and still today they are clean pavement and dry. More winds predicted today and possible snow Thursday. We start winter all over again...more idiot drivers, fender benders, etc. I don’t remember such weather since I’ve been up here.

Today is my birthday-I was born 20 years after the attack. Hard to believe when I think that 20 years ago from today the first Gulf War was already almost a year past. Anyway, I have often wondered if I was per-ordained to end up becoming a career sailor with a birthday like that.
