~ The FReeper Canteen Presents ~

~ Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941 ~

On Sunday, December 7th, 1941 the Japanese launched a surprise attack against the U.S. Forces stationed at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. By planning his attack on a Sunday, the Japanese commander Admiral Nagumo, hoped to catch the entire fleet in port. As luck would have it, the Aircraft Carriers and one of the Battleships were not in port. (The USS Enterprise was returning from Wake Island, where it had just delivered some aircraft. The USS Lexington was ferrying aircraft to Midway, and the USS Saratoga and USS Colorado were undergoing repairs in the United States.) In spite of the latest intelligence reports about the missing aircraft carriers (his most important targets), Admiral Nagumo decided to continue the attack with his force of six carriers and 423 aircraft. At a range of 230 miles north of Oahu, he launched the first wave of a two-wave attack. Beginning at 0600 hours his first wave consisted of 183 fighters and torpedo bombers which struck at the fleet in Pearl Harbor and the airfields in Hickam, Kaneohe and Ewa. The second strike, launched at 0715 hours, consisted of 167 aircraft, which again struck at the same targets. At 0753 hours the first wave consisting of 40 Nakajima B5N2 "Kate" torpedo bombers, 51 Aichi D3A1 "Val" dive bombers, 50 high altitude bombers and 43 Zeros struck airfields and Pearl Harbor. Within the next hour, the second wave arrived and continued the attack.

My grandfather's cousin, Gordon Dodds, was an enlisted soldier stationed at the Schofield Barracks during the attack, and he ended up taking a bullet through the foot. Sent back to the States to recover, he was sent to Fort Knox, where he became an armor officer with the 6th Armored Division.

He passed away a few years ago, but I was fortunate enough to have recorded an interview I made with him when he stayed with my grandparents while attending the Super Sixth's last reunion.

My pleasure. The Pacific Theater of WW2 is probably my favorite era of history.

When I was 11, I saw the movie "The Final Countdown", where the USS Nimitz is thrown back in time and attempts to stop the attack. The next day I went to the school library, checked out two books about the attack, and I've been hooked ever since.

Good evening/morning, ms b...((HUGS))...pictures of the USS Arizona Memorial really get your attention, really make you reflect.

God Bless all of our military men and women from sea to shining sea, and all around the globe, both past and present.

You are fortunate indeed. Before he passed away in the early 90’s my grandfather made an audio recording of his experiences that day. My brother is in the process of converting it over to a file. I hope to make a dedication page someday.

“God Bless all of our military men and women from sea to shining sea, and all around the globe, both past and present.”
Amen, Ma!
Good evening!
Well, still fighting off this flu, it hit like a ton of bricks.
I barely have a voice left!
I sound like a cross between Wolfman Jack and Bette Davis.

I'd heard of the Wreaths Across America only a few years back and updates on how large it's become.....and salute them for their dedication and devotion. There are too few like them it seems lately.

Hoping you're doing better now. I know you've taken care of your soul and mine too. How's the rest holding up?

My youngest son took an early interest in “Pearl Harbor Day” after I took my children to the USS Arizona Monument when they were all young. He’s accumulated several books over the years, so he shares your interest in the WWII Pacific Theater. The number of surviors are dwindling. Very sad day in America, which I hope will never be forgotten.

Thanks again. Good night and God bless you, dear freind.

So, you are saying that we shouldn't have a memorial service on September 11, 2071 for the seventieth anniversary of that attack? And should we do away with the Tomb of the Unknown and the World War Two, Korean War, and Vietnam War Memorials?

2,403 Americans died in the space of two hours. 1,102 men from the Arizona are still entombed aboard her. Please show a little respect.

Now that must be a source of amusement for Mike. Does Jake wonder who's talking to him? Did you get a flu shot? I did not, but they are going to be available in the building and I'm rethinking. Everyone I know who has gotten sick has been REALLY sick, like you.

The express purpose of The Canteen is to honor and REMEMBER the sacrifices made by the military on our behalf.

We honor our active duty military, their families and our Allies.
We teach by putting up threads such as these to help our young understand the price that was paid for freedom.
We honor our Fallen, who took a bullet for us, who gave their very LIVES for us.
Do you understand?

Our soldiers are all that stands between us and tyranny.
If you think that is not important, that is up to you.

““We sleep safe in our beds because rough men stand ready in the night to visit violence on those who would do us harm.” George Orwell.

Please be respectful when you visit here, and if it is not to your liking, pass it by.

Yes, I got a flu shot, and 7 days later, got sick as a dog.
Maybe it’s just coincidence, but I don’t think I will have another one next year.
Really, I don;t ever remember being this sick.
It’s going on 12 days now.
The Doc has no doubt that this is the flu.

Mike has been laughing at my voice all week, the brat!
Jake never pays much attention to me anyway!
LOL
