MSNBC Analyst: We Should Get Rid of the Second Amendment

What is the deal with MSNBC folks being anti-Second Amendment lately? Last week it was fill in host Craig Melvin and this week it's analyst and Huffington Post writer Alex Wagner.

Wagner was on Real Time With Bill Maher and when asked about what should be changed in the Constitution, Wagner said we should get rid of the Second Amendment.

Bill Maher, HBO: "Let's ask Alex. What would you change in the Constitution?"


Alex Wagner, Huffington Post: "Well, I'm going to be pilloried for this. I think get rid of the second Amendment, the right to bear arms. I just think in the grand scheme of the rights that we have; the right of assembly, free speech, I mean, owning a gun does not, it does not tally on the same level as those other Constitutional rights. And being more discreet about who gets to have a firearm and right to kill with a firearm, I think is something that would be in our national interest to revisit that."

Thankfully, Rep. Darrell Issa was on the same panel and set her straight.

Issa: We have a problem in America which is we misunderstand quite frankly what the Second Amendment is for, it's for law abiding citizens to have a right both to protect themselves and to be protected from living under tyranny.

My question for Wagner is this: What happens when you no longer have a right to free speech? The Second Amendment holds up the First Amendment. Criminals don't care if a right to bear arms is in the Constitution, they arm themselves anyway. Disarming law abiding citizens only makes them sitting ducks and victims of violence from criminals and victims of oppression from their government.

History lesson: What was the first thing the Nazi's did? They disarmed the citizenry so they could have total control over the people, and we all know how that ended up.

Adolf Hitler's use of firearms registration lists to confiscate guns and the execution of their owners teaches a forceful lesson -- one that reveals why the American people and Congress have rejected registering honest firearm owners.

The Night of the Broken Glass (Kristallnacht)--the infamous Nazi rampage against Germany's Jews--took place in November 1938. It was preceded by the confiscation of firearms from the Jewish victims. On Nov. 8, the New York Times reported from Berlin, "Berlin Police Head Announces 'Disarming' of Jews," explaining:

The Berlin Police President, Count Wolf Heinrich von Helldorf, announced that as a result of a police activity in the last few weeks the entire Jewish population of Berlin had been "disarmed" with the confiscation of 2,569 hand weapons, 1,702 firearms and 20,000 rounds of ammunition. Any Jews still found in possession of weapons without valid licenses are threatened with the severest punishment.


On the evening of Nov. 9, Adolf Hitler, Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels, and other Nazi chiefs planned the attack. Orders went out to Nazi security forces: "All Jewish stores are to be destroyed immediately . . . . Jewish synagogues are to be set on fire . . . . The Führer wishes that the police does not intervene. . . . All Jews are to be disarmed. In the event of resistance they are to be shot immediately."

Let's hope this is true. It could be that their position is more solid than it looks.

Did you read about the gal who got pushed down the stairs by some OWS lice-ridden cretin?

There was something on FOX a few minutes ago about someone getting killed, but I missed it. By the time I got to the TV , the subject had changed. All I know is there's "an investigation into the death."

Well said! It would be a sincere question. The most dangerous collectivists are the true believers, who quite genuinely want to use the power of government to really "help" people.

What people overlook is that they would continue to "help" us until all personal freedom, initiative, and individualism were completely squeezed out, and pat themselves on the back for doing a good job. Why shouldn't they? They would do all this with the complete accord of their own consciences. This is the point that is so frightening - people like Alex really do not believe they are doing wrong.

I don't think so. I see a few welfare mothers, kids who read on Face Book that the movement is still totally awesome (and believed it), a bunch of bad kids (high school drop outs) with nothing better to do. There are a few crazed anarchists who are doing all the damage, but they're the ones who'll destroy the "Really cool party" for everyone else.

The left was trying to start it's own peaceful movement, like the TEA Party, that the nation would respect and listen to. They blew it. The left wing base can't help but demand free stuff and whine if they don't get it. That's all they know how to do.

What you see are a few people making a lot of noise. If a million were to show up nation wide tomorrow, that would still be a very, very small minority.
Don't let their "noise" fool you. They're aren't that many of them. They're just noisy Oboma supporters with big dreams.

Yes, there are aged, extremely radical 60's hippies trying to take over and control our entire economy, but their time was up when we moved into the 1970's and the Disco era. The kids today don't have the guts, or will, to give up their comfortable lives and high tech toys for "the cause." Today, "left wing men" are no longer men. Heck, they're even afraid to play dodge ball!

Just Try. Anyone who tampers with the constitution is like poking a hornets nest—it will result in a violent response and perhaps Civil War. Maybe a new Confederacy (Herman Cain as President?) CW II would make the first one look like a garden party. Even FDR learned you do not tamper with the Constitution without public support. Even the English learned this when they tried to do away with the House of Lords. Don’t change things that are not broken. The biggest threat to the Constitution is the desire by the lest to get rid of the Electoral College (If we had popular vote we would have had Al Gore as President on 9-11! Think of that mess!). For my book you don’t mess with a good thing.

Yes, and natural rights predated the Constitution and the Bill of Rights too.

Yes, but I was referring to calling the right to keep and bear arms or the right to defend yourself against government predation "the second amendment" prior to it's being written down as the second amendment. Referring to amendments by number in a picture of the revolution is a bit of an anachronism.

People of power and wealth do not like the idea of the great unwashed having access to firearms. Never have.

They know history, and know that power and wealth makes you a target.

This is also why few wealthy people advocate for the 2nd amendment.

Ironic that this idiot doesn't understand that 2A protects all of the other rights.

It goes further than that. My 2nd amendment rights (when I exercise them) protect my dumb ass liberal neighbor during critical events.

I sent a note to a very liberal uncle in FL that debates me regularly on gun rights. I asked him who he would rather have as a next door neighbor during a natural disaster like Andrew or Katrina; me (the gun nut) or an anti gun liberal.

I lived in central FL during Andrew. There were documented instances of rapes and murders averted because of gun owning citizens protecting themselves and their property. It was wild and woolly in a lot of Dade Country, no cop protection and plenty of looters and worse.

Point out to him the following: in order for the government to have the consent of the governed, the governed MUST be free to revoke that consent. If it is any other way, then it is the equivalent of saying that a contract, once entered into, is still binding even if one side utterly fails to uphold its obligations.

Furthermore, if they love the Constitution then they should love the “work order” that is the Declaration of Independence as well; that document says:
That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. How then can one fulfill their duty, as citizens, unless they have the power to throw off that government?
