MSNBC Analyst: We Should Get Rid of the Second Amendment
Townhall.com ^ | November 7, 2011 | Katie Pavlich

What is the deal with MSNBC folks being anti-Second Amendment lately? Last week it was fill in host Craig Melvin and this week it's analyst and Huffington Post writer Alex Wagner.

Wagner was on Real Time With Bill Maher and when asked about what should be changed in the Constitution, Wagner said we should get rid of the Second Amendment.

Bill Maher, HBO: "Let's ask Alex. What would you change in the Constitution?"

Alex Wagner, Huffington Post: "Well, I'm going to be pilloried for this. I think get rid of the second Amendment, the right to bear arms. I just think in the grand scheme of the rights that we have; the right of assembly, free speech, I mean, owning a gun does not, it does not tally on the same level as those other Constitutional rights. And being more discreet about who gets to have a firearm and right to kill with a firearm, I think is something that would be in our national interest to revisit that."

Thankfully, Rep. Darrell Issa was on the same panel and set her straight.

Issa: We have a problem in America which is we misunderstand quite frankly what the Second Amendment is for, it's for law abiding citizens to have a right both to protect themselves and to be protected from living under tyranny.

My question for Wagner is this: What happens when you no longer have a right to free speech? The Second Amendment holds up the First Amendment. Criminals don't care if a right to bear arms is in the Constitution, they arm themselves anyway. Disarming law abiding citizens only makes them sitting ducks and victims of violence from criminals and victims of oppression from their government.

History lesson: What was the first thing the Nazi's did? They disarmed the citizenry so they could have total control over the people, and we all know how that ended up.

Adolf Hitler's use of firearms registration lists to confiscate guns and the execution of their owners teaches a forceful lesson -- one that reveals why the American people and Congress have rejected registering honest firearm owners.

The Night of the Broken Glass (Kristallnacht)--the infamous Nazi rampage against Germany's Jews--took place in November 1938. It was preceded by the confiscation of firearms from the Jewish victims. On Nov. 8, the New York Times reported from Berlin, "Berlin Police Head Announces 'Disarming' of Jews," explaining:

The Berlin Police President, Count Wolf Heinrich von Helldorf, announced that as a result of a police activity in the last few weeks the entire Jewish population of Berlin had been "disarmed" with the confiscation of 2,569 hand weapons, 1,702 firearms and 20,000 rounds of ammunition. Any Jews still found in possession of weapons without valid licenses are threatened with the severest punishment.

On the evening of Nov. 9, Adolf Hitler, Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels, and other Nazi chiefs planned the attack. Orders went out to Nazi security forces: "All Jewish stores are to be destroyed immediately . . . . Jewish synagogues are to be set on fire . . . . The Führer wishes that the police does not intervene. . . . All Jews are to be disarmed. In the event of resistance they are to be shot immediately."

Well, it would be nice if the author of this (and Issa for that matter) actually understood what the so called BoR really is.

"THE Conventions of a number of the States having at the time of their adopting the Constitution, expressed a desire, in order to prevent misconstruction or abuse of its powers, that further declaratory and restrictive clauses should be added: And as extending the ground of public confidence in the Government, will best insure the beneficent ends of its institution ..."

If the BoR did not exist, Congress would STILL have no power to limit speech, take away guns, impose a state religion etc ... because WE NEVER GAVE THEM THE POWER TO DO SO! (stupid commerce clause decisions by the USSC notwithstanding.)

Hamilton was right in his claim that by including a BoR, it would imply that the Congress would otherwise have had the power and that unscrupulous persons would use that implication to extend thier power.

At least I find solace in the fact the Dems never wake up to the fact that their gun control fanaticism has lost them more elections than it has helped win; they never figure it out and never will; which ensures we will have many more Repub administrations down the road.

Even Obama who attempts to be quiet as a church mouse concerning gun control screws up with gun walker; they can't help themselves.

Perhaps sometime in 2013 someone in the House can do something to reintroduce competition to cable TV channels. A lot of these channels wouldn’t be on the air if they weren’t part of a “bundle” of channels that consumers are forced to purchase to get the 2 or 3 channels they really want.

Do you really think many households would pay $1 or $2 per channel for the likes of MSNBC, MTV, HSN, etc?

What we have now is a total lack of competition.

That is only true if you are willing to USE your Second Amendment Rights to protect the rest of your Rights.

Give that a try and see how fast folks turn on you for not "following the system"...

The founders, in the Declaration, wrote of what you are “observing”.

People are tolerating abuses while they are tolerable, and not seeking the chaos of overthrow while any other means is still possible.

The problem is, are “modern man” is more/too tolerant of abuses and is too hopeful of other solutions.

Your posts sums up the difference between the thinking of the so called elite and average folks.

The elite love gun control, but not for the reason so they can take over the country and install a dictatorship with them leading it although gun control does make that easier.

Gun control is loved by the left elites because it reflects their world view of average citizens. They believe that average folks are incapable of handling their own lives and they need the elites to plan it for them. Because average people cannot function without the plans of the left in their minds, how can they be trusted with firepower and the access to force?

I've seen a poll were gun control has become an increasingly unpopular issue with the general public and gun ownership is up. is it also a coincidence that trust and faith in government is at an all time low????

How do we protect the other rights without the 2nd?

These people just don't get it. The government exists at our pleasure; it serves us. We don't serve it.

The left is following the Cloward–Piven / Alinsky strategies and extending them to cause fear and unrest on as many fronts as possible. Logical protest is certainly not part of OWS, but perceived power and public disruption are.

If they can strike fear in the hearts of the people by acting as if they are bigger than they are and spark incidents that their media can use to justify a government crackdown. Their aims are achieved.

Their Government will no longer be responsible to the people, just to the “more equal”.

These are perilous times and we need to press for our freedom from government more than ever.

Mr. Wagner, sire, you are cordially invited to leave the Washington Beltway Bubble and come to flyover land amongst the unwashed masses, and attempt to seize weapons and ammunition of average Americans they are lawfuly allowed to possess and use by their Constitution. Time? Date? Location?

Name it, asshat. Be there or be square, baby.
