Not defending the market, but a pet peeve of mine is people eating in grocery stores. Not food courts, but in the aisles.

People that eat things that get weighed (like grapes) are simply stealing.

You don't eat stuff until you have paid for it.

It ain't rocket surgery.

I hope the store manager is fired, and the woman fined.

Might have been okay to cut this chick some slack.

IMHO, the store manager should have reminded this woman about the sandwich that was eaten. It could have been a mistake since she paid for fifty dollars of groceries. I have never eaten in a store BUT I have drank in one on occasion. Once when I had to take a prescription and once when I had a allergy/coughing attack. Yes... I paid for my seltzer purchase but simply because a rather large, empty bottle was in the cart.

I haven't read the article yet, but I'm with you on this. I have never eaten anything (or given food to whining children) in a grocery store until I've paid for it. How do I know that my credit card won't go through when I get to the register? There have been times when my credit card doesn't work because there was some suspicious activity and the bank cut it off. And eating things that have to be weighed? Unbelievable!

>>People that eat things that get weighed (like grapes) are simply stealing.<<

I fully agree with you and have been VERY vocal about it. I will say to my kids, “People who eat fruit they haven’t paid for are STEALING!!”

I’ve seen a couple seniors walk away redfaced, a few moms pull their kids away.

I never buy grapes without sampling one. Too many times I’ve gotten home and found them sour and uneatable.

I think I’ve eaten something just once while in the grocery and I put the wrapper on the checkout counter to tally.

For reporting people stealing from him?

They were taken to the main Honolulu police station where they were booked for fourth degree theft. Then Zophia was taken into custody by Child Protective Services.

What would you have them do with the kid? Put her in a cell too, while her thieving parents make bail?

Once, while working at a 7-11, a customer made some nachos and walked right out the door. A couple of policemen were in the store, and I alerted them right away. They went out and talked to the customer. The customer came back, apologized, and paid. End of story.

I’m not sure why the store manager insisted on so much more than immediate payment. Maybe a stern lecture about consuming items before paying for them would have been in order, but more than that is just excessive, IMO.

"pick up some sandwiches and eat them while we were shopping,"

Nope, very bad idea. You have no idea how much loss occurs this way.

I bet they won’t forget to pay for their sandwiches again. I see people eating food all the time in grocery stores and I bet it adds up to a significant cost to the store, which of course gets passed along to the rest of us. I’m sure every person who is caught has the same “I just forgot to pay” story also.

She's 30 weeks pregnant ~ pretty obvious from the picture ~ stuff happens.

She'll be getting free formula for a year from this Safeway before it's over.

There's a concept called proportionality of penalty. There's no sense that was thought of here. Every day hundreds of people go in and out of that store and whatever they do is going to be on the store's surveillance cameras. The last thing any of those people think is that in case of one little slip-up they're going to have their children seized by the government.

Frankly I am surprised the store manager didn't accept the offer of payment on the spot ~ he'll lose all of his pregnant customers, or customers who care for a young child, in fact, all the "Handicapped Parking" folks. People who might be distracted from shopping by other concerns should never put themselves in the scope of responsibility of this particular manager or his team.

NOTE: never eat any of those pre-prepared sancwiches at any store ~ they'll custom make the same thing for you, so watch closely to avoid contamination.

Absolutely. I had the experience a couple of weeks ago of finding my debit card cut off. When I called the bank, it turned out that someone had tried to make a $2,200 and a $365 purchase on line with my debit card. Then, because I had to start using my credit cards (which I never do), that alerted the two credit card companies of possible fraud on my account, which caused them also to be cut off. It's embarrassing enough to not be able to pay for things at the check-out; having already consumed some of the items would be worse than embarrassing.

Oh, I have a new debit card. It was broken in yesterday.

Ok, fine the husband, then. I’m not in favor of paying more for my groceries because someone thinks they are entitled to chow-down while shopping, and “forget” to pay for it.
